Cuesta 87, Lassen 56

#8-South Cuesta (11-2) had little trouble in the opening round of the 43rd Annual Delta Holiday Tournament, leading wire to wire and cruising to a 31-point win over Lassen (1-11) Friday afternoon in Stockton.

Cuesta got off to a sputtering start, turning the ball over on two of its first three possessions, prompting a timeout by Head Coach Rusty Blair despite Cuesta holding a 2-0 lead on a pair of free throws by SF Roger Guardia.

Whatever he said to his team, it proved quite successful as Cuesta never surrendered the lead and soon pulled away for the blowout victory. Lassen got within a point at 10-9 in the early minutes, but it didn't stay close for very long.

A jumper by PG Jonathan Henry pushed the lead to double-digits at 21-11 with 10:44 left in the first half. The margin was 16 at the half, as Cuesta led, 44-28. A basket by PF Seth Koenig made it a 20-point game at 55-35 less than five minutes into the second half, and a pair of threes by PF Henok Yigsaw pushed the margin to 32 at 76-44 with more than eight minutes left.

Yigzaw led all scorers with 21 pts, all on 3-pointers, on 7-for-9 from the floor. SG Phillip Jiminez had 13 pts and Ctr Xavier Mylleville had 12 pts and a game-high 9 rebs. Guardia had 10 pts and PG Christian Koutras had 6 pts plus 7 rebs and a game-high 11 asts. Cuesta shot 56% from the floor with 10 3-pointers.

For Lassen, Ctr Christian Couthen led the way with 10 pts and 5 rebs. PG Daveron Ross had 7 pts and 3 asts, and PF Dale Puckett Jr. had 7 pts and 6 rebs. But Lassen shot just 29% from the floor. And the Lassen staff was so inept that they were whistled for one technical foul for listing SF Andre Jeffries Jr. under the wrong uniform number and should have been whistled for another for not having #14 - whoever he is - listed in the official scorer's book.
