#1-ranked City College of San Francisco (11-1) overcame a sluggish first half and went on a key 17-0 run to take control in a 76-65 win over Merced (2-9) in the first round of the 43rd Annual Delta Holiday Tournament Friday night in Stockton.
CCSF began the game with SF Christopher White winning the tip and PF DaRon Sims running down the ball in the frontcourt, going in for the lay-up, drawing a foul and making the free throw to give the Rams a 3-0 lead just three seconds in. PG Daryl Cooper made a lay-up to make it 5-0 thirty seconds into the game, making it look like CCSF could win in a rout.
But after that, things changed dramatically. PG Alonzo Sharpe hit a 3-pointer midway through the half to pull Merced even at 18-18, and moments later hit another one to give Merced a 21-20 lead. CCSF went back in front, 23-21, but then Merced went back in the lead on a 3-pointer by Ctr Logan Wiens that made it 28-25. A basket by SF Tamar Moultrie made it 30-25, and the Merced lead reached 8 points at 38-30 after another Sharpe 3-pointer with 3:57 left in the half.
CCSF got within three points at halftime after a 3-point play in the final minute by Cooper, and took the lead early in the second half after a lay-up by Cooper and a 3-pointer by SF Bennie Rhodes. But the score remained close and was tied 52-52 before CCSFs decisive run.
Then, finally, CCSF put together a 17-0 run to put the game away. A putback basket by White made it 60-52. Then a pair of 3-point plays by Rhodes one on a 3-point basket and the next on a traditional FG+FT play made it 66-52 with 9:24 left. A Rhodes free throw with 9:14 left made it 67-52, and a putback basket by Ctr Yoan Zola made it 69-52 with 9:08 left. The lead remained in double digits the rest of the way.
White led all scorers and had a double-double for CCSF with 18 pts and 11 rebs. Sims and Ctr Jonathon Williams had 14 pts each and Rhodes came off the bench for 11 pts. Cooper had 6 pts and team-highs of 4 asts and 4 steals.
For Merced, Wiens led the way with 16 pts, 7 rebs and 3 asts. Moultrie had 10 pts and Sharpe had 9 pts and 7 asts. PF JerMichael Williams had 4 pts plus team-highs of 9 rebs and 3 blocked shots.
