Glendale 80, Southwestern 64

SG Mark Hicks scored 19 pts and Ctr Gor Plavchyan had 17 pts and 20 rebs to lead Glendale to an 80-64 win over visiting Southwestern Tuesday evening at Verdugo Gym.

Glendale (6-6) led most of the way, opening a 20-point lead early in the second half. Southwestern (7-7) closed the gap to 4 points midway through the second half, but then the Vaqueros went on an 11-0 run to regain control, and led by double digits the rest of the way.

Glendale jumped out to an 19-8 lead with 8:25 left in the first half. At that point, Southwestern had made just 4 of 18 field goal attempts. It was a rather striking statistical coincidence - last night WSC-South rival Citrus led, 19-8, about 13 minutes into the game against #1-ranked Mt. SAC, which was also 4-for-18 from the floor at the time.

And the Jaguars got a 3-pointer from SF Dominique Miller, seemingly showing signs of making a comeback. Last night, of course, Mt. SAC overcame that frigid start to post a 16-point victory over Citrus.

But Glendale kept stretching its lead, thanks largely to Plavchyan, who had a double-double in the game's first 15 minutes. Shortly after Plavchyan's 10th rebound, PF Mike Johnson scored on a 3-point play to push the Vaquero lead to 15 points at 29-14 with 4:28 left in the half.

Johnson passed to Hicks for a back-door lay-up to stretch the lead to 17 points at 36-19, and PG Dion Nelson pushed the lead to 19 points at 41-22 with just under a minute left in the first half. SG Devonte Sims sank a 28-foot 3-pointer for Southwestern, but Hicks scored on a lay-up for Glendale to make it 43-25 at the half.

SF Alex Bullock scored on a putback about 40 seconds into the second half to push Glendale's lead to 20 points at 45-25.

Southwestern put together a rally, sparked by a bank-shot and a 3-pointer from Miller, and cut into the Vaquero lead. PF Robert Perez scored on a putback and Ctr Lamar Weston split two free throws to make it 47-35. Then Farah made a pair of 3-pointers, completing a 16-2 run, to make it 47-41 with more than 14 minutes left on the clock. Another Farah 3-pointer brought the Jaguars within four points at 52-48.

But then Glendale went on an 11-0 run, pushing the lead back to 15 points and putting the Vaqueros in control once again. 3-pointers by SF Isaiah Howard and PG Chris Kapooshian sparked the run, which continued with an acrobatic flip shot by Howard and another 3-pointer by Kapooshian that made it 63-48 with 7:45 left. Glendale led by double digits the rest of the way.

Hicks led all scorers with his 19 pts for Glendale. Plavchyan had a huge game with 17 pts, 20 rebs, 3 blocks, 2 asts and 2 steals. Johnson had a double-double with 10 pts and 10 rebs, and Bullock just missed a double-double with 8 pts and 12 rebs. Glendale held an overpowering 58-32 advantage on the boards for the night. Howard and Kapooshian each came off the bench for 10 pts, leading the final clinching 11-0 run.

For Southwestern, Farah scored 17 pts, including 5 threes, with all of those 3-pointers coming in the second half. Miller added 15 pts and 6 rebs. Sims came off the bench for 9 pts and PG Jay Stone had 8 pts and 4 asts.
