SF Vershan Cottrell scored 23 pts and grabbed 6 rebs to lead host #5 Ohlone (11-1) to a 74-63 win over #15 San Jose (6-5) in Fremont December 19th.
Cottrell hit on 10 of his 15 shots, including 3 threes, and his point and rebound totals were game-highs. PF Mychal Green had 17 pts on 7/11 shooting. And PG Ronnie Holmes not only had 9 pts and a game-best 7 asts, but was a standout on defense as well, holding SJCC's star PG Rickey Williams to 7 pts (3/12 fgs).
Ohlone burst out to a 36-15 lead late in the first half, taking advantage of some cold SJCC shooting. Though the Jaguars closed the half on a 6-0 run to trail by just 15 at the break, they were shooting 28/6% from the floor in the first half. SJCC rallied to close the gap to 8 at 63-55 with 3:22 to play, but then Ohlone responded. 2 FTs by SG Christopher Burnett, followed by a steal by Holmes and a feed to Cottrell for a layup, and then 2 FTs by Holmes made it 69-53 with 2:02 left and put Ohlone in control.
San Jose was led by Ctr John Moore, who had a huge game with 18 pts, 7 rebs and 3 blocks. SG Josh Reisman had 16 pts. Williams had 7 pts and a team-best 6 asts.
