Sierra (7-5) used its depth to wear down Merced (4-11), overcoming a 12-point first-half deficit to post a 70-61 win in the first round of the 42nd Annual Delta Holiday Tournament Friday afternoon in Stockton.
All 10 players scored at least a basket for Sierra, led by Ctr Ryan Parker, who came off the bench for 15 pts and 9 rebs, and SF Anthony Anderson, who came off the bench to score 12 pts.
Merced began the game well, building a 26-14 lead with just less than 7 minutes left in the first half. But Sierra closed the gap to just 3 points at 28-25 at the half, and took a 33-30 lead on a 3-point play by Parker with 16:28 left.
Sierra led the rest of the game, but it was still a 3-point game after a driving lay-up by Merced SF Steven Diaz with just less than 5 minutes to play. The came a pair of baskets by Parker, however, putting Sierra in control. A pair of free throws by Ctr Bryant Langston with 1:26 left made it a 10-point game, essentially sealing the win for the Wolverines.
PF Erin Walker had a double-double for Merced with game-highs of 19 pts and 14 rebs, plus 4 asts and 2 blocks. Ctr Glen Ayers and Diaz each had 11 pts, and SF Lavell Shipman had 10 pts plus 6 rebs, 4 asts and 4 steals.
