Ctr Frank Muller had 22 pts and 8 rebs to lead #10 (S) Cuesta (13-4) to a 72-56 win over #12 (N) Butte (10-4) in the marquee matchup of the first round of the 42nd Annual Delta Holiday Tournament Friday afternoon in Stockton.
Muller was one of four standouts for the Cougars, who jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first minute and led for all but a few moments of the entire game. PF Josimar Ayarza had 17 pts and 7 rebs for the winners, and PG Christian Koutras had 8 pts while dishing out 11 asts. And SF Tom Schumacher had 10 pts on 4-for-5 from the floor plus 5 rebs and 2 asts.
Butte briefly took a 10-9 lead on a basket by PF Pavol Losonsky, but Cuesta then scored the game's next 8 points and led the rest of the way. At halftime, Cuesta led, 36-27, and a basket by Koutras early in the second half pushed the margin to double figures. Butte rallied to within 7 at 46-39 midway through the second half, but then a 3-pointer by Muller and a turnaround jumper by Ayarza put Cuesta back in control at 51-39. Butte never got within single digits again.
SG Devon Hills led Butte with 17 pts and game-highs of 9 rebs and 4 steals. Losonsky had 10 pts and 8 rebs. PG Tyree Haynie had 8 pts and a team-high 4 asts.
