Four players scored in double figures as Shasta (5-7) beat a ranked team for the second time in the tournament, edging #11 Los Medanos (7-5), 76-72, in the third place game of the 34th Annual Kris Kringle Classic at Santa Rosa Junior College Saturday night.
In the first round of the tournament, Shasta defeated tourney favorite and 5th-ranked Yuba. In this game, the Knights were decided underdogs to the high-powered Mustangs entering the game, but led virtually every step and held off a late charge to get the win.
Shasta began the game on a 6-2 spurt on a pair of 3-pointers by PG Derek Evans. Los Medanos rallied to take a 10-8 lead on a basket by PF Joe Simpson, but Shasta went right back in front and built a 5-point lead at 20-15 on a 3-pointer by SG Tyler Kingdon. The lead reached as much as 13 points late in the first half after a basket by Ctr Kevin Loustale made it 40-27, and the Knights led by 10 at halftime, 42-32.
When the second half began, Shasta extended its lead to as many as 16 points after a 3-pointer by SF Vincent Mayle made it 54-38, and led by 15 as late as the 11-minute mark at 58-43.
Then Los Medanos rallied, cutting the margin to five points with a 10-0 run that ended with a driving lay-up by SG Richard Boston that made it 58-53 with just under 9 minutes left. Shasta pushed the lead back to 10 at 63-53 with 5:48 left, but LMC again got within 5 points at 64-59 after a pair of free throws by PF Eric Brown with 3:55 remaining.
But Shasta maintained the lead, never letting the margin get below the final total of four points. A 3-pointer by PG Tyree Murray got the Mustangs within five at 73-68, but a pair of free throws by PF Matt Fogarty made it 75-68. Then Ctr Corey Douglas threw down a jam for LMC to make it 75-70, but a free throw by Evans made it 76-70 with 44.5 seconds left. Neither team scored again until Simpsons putback basket with 9.7 seconds left, but by then LMC was out of time.
Mayle came off the bench to lead Shasta with 17 pts. Evans had 12 pts, while Kingdon and SF Ty Houghton each had 10 pts and 4 asts, and SG Carson Mack had 10 pts and 3 asts. Fogarty had 9 pts, and Loustale had 8 pts and a game-high 13 rebs, earning a berth on the All-Tournament team.
For Los Medanos, Simpson had 20 pts and 8 rebs, while Boston came off the bench and also scored 20 pts. Murray had 9 pts and 6 asts, while Douglas had 5 pts, 9 rebs and 3 blocked shots.
