ARC Tops Yuba
SF Adam Gilbert came off the bench but proved to be the difference in American River's (11-4) 80-70 win over Yuba (8-2) in the Final of the Kris Kringle Tourney in Santa Rosa December 20th.
Gilbert had a remarkable game: 21 pts, 10 rebs, 5 asts and 3 steals, despite not even starting. SG Kenneth Sims added 20 (3 threes) and 6 rebs and claimed Tourney MVP honors for the 3-day event. His three and putback FG with about 7 mins left put ARC ahead, 59-53, and a FG+FT 3-point play moments later by PG Ranaldo Spotwood made it 62-53. Yuba never really threated after that. Spotwood finished with 7 pts and 6 asts, while Ctr Joel Henning added 14 pts. PF Mark McKelvy had a strong game off the bench with 7 pts and 8 rebs.
And even in the loss, SF Lawrence Wright put on an aerial show. From the opening tip - which he won easily against ARC's 6-8 Henning - to a series of leaps in the final minutes, Wright displayed the athleticism that has given him the deserved reputation of being among the state's most exciting players. And he finished with a game-high 25 pts plus 7 rebs for the 49ers.
However, he was the only Yuba player to reach double figures in scoring. Ctr Rodney Hannah had 9 pts and 4 rebs, but battled foul trouble in the second half and had to leave the game with a finger injury in the last few minutes. PG Jon Sheets added 9 pts and made the All-Tourney team.
