Ctr Gerrell Knightshead had 20 pts, 7 rebs and 5 asts as host Santa Rosa (7-7) topped Hartnell (8-9), 83-72, in the championship game of the 33rd Annual Kris Kringle tournament Saturday night.
Knightshead was one of four Bear Cubs to score in double figures, helping Santa Rosa overcome a sizzling start by Hartnell. And in the second half, it was the host Bear Cubs who were sizzling, shooting 69% from the floor while outscoring the Panthers 49-36.
For the game's first few minutes, it looked like Hartnell might just run away with it. The Panthers led, 27-17, just over 9 minutes in after a 3-pointer by PG Heath Gameren.
But Santa Rosa rallied, tying the game late in the first half at 32-32 before a one-handed shot by PF Griffin Brady gave Hartnell a 36-34 lead at the break. The game remained close until midway through the second half, and the score was still tied at 55 just before the halfway point.
But then Santa Rosa went on a 17-2 run to take control of the game. Four free throws by Ctr Matt Cousins began the run. Then PG Andrew Gipson and SG Jordan Freelander scored to make it 63-55. Then first Knightshead passed to Cousins for a basket, and then Cousins passed to Knightshead for a score to make it 67-55.
After a putback by Brady finally got Hartnell back on the scoreboard and made it 67-57, Santa Rosa got a jumper from Cousins and a 3-point play from Freelander to make it 72-57 with 5:27 left. Hartnell never got closer than 10 points the rest of the way.
Knightshead was named the tourney MVP for his performance. Cousins came off the bench to post a double-double with 22 pts and 10 rebs. SG Xavier Cannefax chipped in with 16 pts and SF Robby Burroughs had 10 for the victorious Bear Cubs.
For Hartnell, SF Blake Francom had a game-high 23 pts, including 3 threes, one of which came from about the 28-foot mark. Brady had 18 pts and Ctr Ian Hosford had a double-double with 17 pts and 13 rebs. Gameren had 7 pts, 6 rebs and 5 asts.
