Monterey Peninsula 75, West Valley 71

Ctr Matt Baker had 31 pts and 9 rebs to lead Monterey Peninsula (9-6) to a 75-71 win over the host Vikings (6-9) and 3rd Place in the 3rd Annual West Valley Holiday Classic Sunday afternoon at Mission College in Santa Clara.

Baker went 10-for-16 from the floor, scoring 21 of his game-high point total in the second half as MPC overcame a 7-point halftime deficit to get the win. For his efforts, Baker was named to the All-Tournament team.

Early on, West Valley jumped out to a 23-12 lead on six 3-pointers, three by PF Sean Visser. Then 2-point baskets from Ctr Anthony Frank and SF Jordan Gallagher pushed the lead to 15 points at 27-12 midway through the first half.

But then MPC went on a 13-0 run, cutting the margin to just two points at 27-25 after a basket by PF Harvey T.J. Todd with 6:15 left in the first half. West Valley maintained the lead, however, and pushed the lead back to 7 points when PG Damon Jones hit a 3-pointer, WVC's 8th of the game, in the final seconds of the first half to make it 40-33.

Monterey Peninsula quickly wiped out that deficit when the second half started, taking a 43-42 lead when Todd scored on an inbounds play with 16:37 left in the game. The lead changed hands several times in the next few minutes, and the score was tied at 52 midway through the half.

Then MPC went on an 15-4 spurt to take a 67-56 lead after a putback basket by Baker with just under 7 minutes left. MPC never lost that lead, though West Valley did rally in the final minutes.

A basket by SF Isaiah Pfister, who poked the ball away and then received a pass from Jones, got West Valley within three points at 71-68 with 2:26 left. MPC SG Alx Brandon converted a FG+FT 3-point play with 2:04 left to make it 74-68, but WVC got a FG+FT 3-point play from Visser to again close to within three points at 74-71 with 1:55 left.

But WVC never quite pulled even. Neither team sored again until the final seconds. WVC's Visser missed a would-be game-tying 3-pointer with 44.4 seconds left, and the Vikings nearly got the ball back in the final seconds when Jones stole the ball as the shot clock neared zero. But Todd stole the ball back for MPC moments later, giving the Lobos possession and a reset of the shot clock. Baker's free throw with 7.5 seconds left made it 75-71, clinching the win for MPC.

Besides Baker, Todd was the only MPC player to score in double figures, finishing with 16 pts, 4 rebs, 5 asts and 3 steals. Brandon had 9 pts adn 4 asts, and SF Miceh Philip had 7 pts and 5 asts. PG Julian Demalleville had 4 pts and a game-high 9 asts.

For West Valley, PG Devon Mynhier led the way with 16 pts and 5 asts. Visser had 15 pts and Frank had 12 and Pfister had 11.
