Cabrillo 81, Chabot 78 (OT)

SG Travess Armenta scored 5 of his game-high 20 pts in OT as Cabrillo (7-8) knocked off host #13 Chabot (10-7), 81-78, in the 3rd Place game of the 42nd Annual Chabot College Classic Sunday afternoon.

This one was close all the way, with neither team ever building a double-digit lead. Cabrillo led by as many as 9 points several times in the second half before Chabot rallied to take a lead with 5:08 remaining. The lead went back and forth in the final minutes of regulation before PF Maurice Stewart converted a FG+FT 3-point play with 20.9 seconds left, tying the game at 69 and sending it to overtime.

Armenta began the overtime with a 3-pointer that gave Cabrillo a 72-69 lead, and the Seahawks held the lead until Chabot Ctr Lonnie Brazil scored on a putback basket to tie the score at 78. But then Armenta made a pair of free throws with 1:11 left to give Cabrillo an 80-78 lead.

But the drama wasn't over yet by any means. Neither team scored again as the clock went down below a minute left, with Chabot holding possession after calling a timeout. On the restart, SF Mark Stevenson's inbounds pass was intercepted by SF Kevin Konopelski with 50 seconds left.

Trailing by 2 points in the final minute, Chabot Coach Dennis Aye chose to have his team play defense rather than foul. But Cabrillo managed to run the shot clock down to 3, at which point PG Tony Gallo drew a foul driving to the basket. However, Gallo missed the first of his two free throws, and even when he made the second it was still a one-possession game at 81-78.

However, Stevenson's 3-point try in the final seconds missed. Stevenson had also missed a desperation half-court 3-point try at the end of regulation that would have given the Gladiators the win.

Cabrillo had started the game strong, jumping out to a 4-0 lead on a pair of baskets by Ctr Peterson Barnard, and leading 7-2 after a 3-pointer by Armenta. But Chabot rallied quickly, taking an 11-10 lead, and the lead went back and forth the rest of the half before a pair of Armenta threes helped Cabrillo take a 30-26 lead at halftime.

Armenta finished with 20 pts, including the 6 threes, plus 6 rebs and 5 asts, and was named to the all-tournament team. Barnard had 17 pts on 7-of-7 from the floor. Gallo had 16 pts and a game-high 6 asts, and PF Steve Williams added 11 pts and 4 asts.

For Chabot, SG Jawon Mack came off the bench to lead the way with 19 pts, including 3 threes, and also grabbed 7 rebs. PG Josh Crumel had 18 pts and 3 asts. Brazil just missed a double-double with 12 pts and a game-high 9 rebs.
