Las Positas 62, Diablo Valley 60

#4 Las Positas (14-2) got a double-double from PF Nick Marshall and held off a furious late charge from #9 Diablo Valley (9-5) to grab a 62-60 win and the championship of the 42nd Annual Chabot College Classic Sunday afternoon in Hayward.

Marshall was named tourney MVP for his 21-point, 12-rebound, 3-block performance Sunday afternoon. But that was only after Las Positas held on for the win after seeing almost all of a 17-point second-half lead disappear.

Las Positas led most of the game, opening a 9-2 lead in the first four minutes. DVC rallied to take a 12-11 lead and the teams exchanged the lead for the next few minutes, but Las Positas grabbed a 22-18 lead when SG Jeff Ford converted a 3-point play on a reverse lay-up and FT with 3:15 left in the first half. Two threes by PG Joe Faumuina helped the Hawks hold a 30-25 lead at the half.

And Las Positas scored the first 8 points of the second half to take a 38-25 lead in the first two minutes. That advantage eventually grew as high as 17 points at 49-32 after a turnaround jumper by Marshall with 13:36 left.

But then came the DVC comeback. Threes by SG Dan Daviess and SF Benji Arvizu spurred the rally, cutting the deficit to 50-40. And then foul trouble began to haunt Las Positas, with two starters picking up their fourth fouls and DVC getting into the bonus, all before the 9-minute mark.

Las Positas still held a double-digit lead until an Arvizu free throw made it 57-48 with 4:01 left. And the Hawks still had a 6-point lead at 61-55 with 2:05 left.

But Diablo Valley got a free throw from Arvizu to make it 61-56 with 1:47 remaining. Then PG Gary Pinkney grabbed a steal and scored to make it 61-58 with 1:22 left. And a driving-lay-up by Arvizu with 37.3 seconds left mad it 61-60. A missed shot by Marshall gave DVC the ball with 20 seconds remaining.

After a timeout, DVC got the ball to Arvizu with a chance to take the lead. But his twisting shot bounced off the rim. Marshall got the rebound for Las Positas and was fouled with 2 seconds left. He made just one of his two free throws to make it 62-60. But DVC never got a final shot away as Arvizu dribbled the ball off a Las Positas defender's foot around midcourt just before the final buzzer.

The winning coach was Tony Costello, who coached at Chabot for many years, building the program to prominence in the 1990s before heading out to Las Positas and launching the basketball program there.

Marshall led the way for the Hawks, who were playing without standout PF Troy Lambert (recovering from a concussion). Faumuina added 15 pts, including 4 threes, and Ford chipped in with 11 pts. SF Willie Richardson had 9 pts and an amazing 9 steals.

For Diablo Valley, Arvizu led the way with 25 pts, 6 rebs and 4 asts. Daviess added 19 pts.

Faumuina and Ford were named to the All-Tournament team for Las Positas. Arvizu and Pinkney were named to the All-Tournament team for Diablo Valley.
