Neither a stubborn Compton squad nor a misbehaving fire alarm could stop Oxnard from posting a 77-69 win over the Tartars Tuesday night at The Condors’ Nest.
After seeing a 12-point first-half lead turn into a 6-point second-half deficit, Oxnard (7-7) went on a 16-2 run to take an 8-point lead with 13:16 left in the game. SG Moises Barrera hit a 3-pointer despite the distraction of the flashing lights and buzzers of the fire alarm, which started just as he was lining up his shot.
That resulted in a 10-minute delay. But when play resumed, Oxnard continued its run, scoring 10 of the game’s next 12 points for a 26-4 extended run that pushed the lead to 62-46 after a steal & jam by PG Devon Marshall.
Compton (6-7) rallied again, closing within six points after a 3-pointer by Daraye Foote with 1:21 left. But those would be the final points of the night for the Tartars. Two free throws by SF Gary Johnson with 23.4 seconds left made it 77-69 and clinched the win for the Condors.
That was Compton’s second rally of the night. Oxnard jumped out to a 28-16 lead after a Barrera 3-pointer midway through the first half. But Compton tied the score at 34 on a pair of free throws by SF Brian Kim with 41.2 seconds left in the first half. Then the Tartars went ahead, 36-34, on a bakset by SG Jamell McMilan to start the second half and led, 42-36, three minutes into the second half
Then came the Oxnard run. Barrera hit a 3-pointer and then PF Stephan Thompson scored a 3-point play the old-fashioned way to give the Condors a 46-44 lead with 14:49 left. Then Barrera banked home another 3-pointer to make it 49-44. Then he swished a three to make it 52-44, just as the fire alarm started blaring.
After the delay, the Oxnard run continued with a lay-up by Thompson and a bank-shot jumper by Ctr Bobby Johnson that made it 56-44. After McMilan scored for Compton, Thompson scored a pair of baskets for Oxnard to make it 60-46. Then Marshall’s steal & jam pushed the lead to 16.
Things looked a little unconventional at the start of the game – Compton boasted the tallest player on the floor in 6-10 Ctr Christian Pumphrey, but no other starter was listed at taller than 6-0, while all five of Oxnard’s starters were at least 6-3.
Barrera and Gary Johnson tied for game honors with 18 pts each; Barrera scored all of his points on his 6 three-pointers; Johnson had 8 rebs, 3 asts and a steal. Thompson had 15 pts, 9 rebs, 2 asts, 2 steals and a blocked shot. PF Jahmahl Slater came off the bench for 11 pts and 6 rebs.
For Compton, Foote had 15 pts, including 3 threes, plus 3 rebs, 3 asts and 4 steals. Pumphrey had 11 pts and a game-high 13 rebs before fouling out with 23.4 seconds left. PG Matthew Mosley had 9 pts and a game-high 7 asts.
