PF Brenden Evans had 25 pts and 14 rebs, and SG Mike Hill scored 21 second-half points to lead #10 (North) Modesto to a 90-75 win over host Modesto Friday afternoon.
After trailing 37-34 at halftime, Modesto (8-5) started the second half with a 10-0 run to take a lead, and led the rest of the way. Moorpark (5-7) was within two points at 44-42, but a 3-pointer by Hill gave Modesto a 65-52 lead with 8:40 left, and the Pirates led by double digits the rest of the game.
And during the 10-0 Modesto run, Moorpark lost SF Matt Ramon for the remainder of the game with an apparent injury to his right foot or ankle. Ramon entered the game as the Raiders' leading scorer at 15.2 points per game.
Modesto took the largest lead of the first half at 21-13 with just over 8 minutes left in the half. But Moorpark answered with an 8-0 spurt to tie the game, and took a 22-21 lead on a 3-pointer by SG Spencer Levy with just over six minutes left in the half.
Levy broke a 34-all tie with a 3-pointer with about 25 seconds left in the first half to give Moorpark a 37-34 lead at the break. But that would be Moorpark's last lead of the game.
Modesto quickly tied the score when SG Kyle Seever hit a 3-pointer in the opening seconds of the second half, and took a 39-37 lead on a baby hook shot by Evans moments later. A free throw by Evans and a putback basket by Ctr Jerrod Patton made it 42-37. A basket by Evans off a pass from PG Alex Rivera completed the run, making it 44-37.
Moorpark got within two points at 44-42 a little bit later after a 3-pointer by Levy and a putback basket by Ctr Jordan Garrett. But Modesto quickly restored its double-digit lead and held it the rest of the game.
SF Evan Grimes hit a 3-pointer to push Modesto's lead to 49-42, and Evans added 2 free throws with 13:09 left to make it 51-42. A 3-pointer by SG Ricky Inderbitzin made it 54-44.
Modesto gradually stretched its lead, with Hill making 2 free throws wtih 10:48 left to make it 57-46. A Hill 3-pointer with 8:40 left made it 65-52. Another Hill 3-pointer made it 68-54 about a minute later. Modesto never got the deficit back to single digits again.
For Modesto, Evans had a huge game, posting game-highs with his 25 points and 14 rebounds. Hill scored all of his 21 points in the second half on 5-for-6 from the floor with 3 threes. Rivera had 10 pts, 7 rebs, 7 asts, 4 steals and a blocked shot. Seever also had 10 pts for the Pirates.
For Moorpark, PF Sahdi Odu had a double-double with 17 pts and 10 rebs. Garrett also had a double-double with 16 pts, 10 rebs, 3 asts and 3 blocked shots. Levy had 12 pts on 4 three-pointers. PG Shayan Boloor had 7 pts and a game-high 8 asts.
