Mira Costa 59, Scottsdale AZ 58

SG Baptiste Boucharel and SG Lawrence Chamberlain each scored 13 pts for Mira Costa, which ran its record to 6-2 with a 59-58 win over Scottsdale (AZ) in the consolation final of the 61st Annual Gregg Anderson Memorial Tournament Sunday afternoon at Antelope Valley College.

It was a tight, hard-fought game, but it was anything but pretty. Neither team led by more than nine points the entire game, and the lead was never more than three points over the last 7:40.

And the game featured two teams far from home playing their third game in three days. It was also a game with an early (1 pm) start. And as the teams combined to shoot 29% from the floor, Gregg Popovich undoubtedly would have sent both teams home for a rest.

Mira Costa (6-2) took an early 14-8 lead after a 3-pointer by Boucharel, and also led by six points at 26-20 late in the first half. At the break, Mira Costa held a slim 29-26 lead despite having made just 11 of 42 shots from the floor (26%).

Scottsdale (3-5) took a 33-31 lead early in the second half, but Mira Costa answered with a 13-2 run, the only prolonged scoring run of the game. That gave the Spartans a 44-35 lead after a 3-pointer by PG Travon Tucker.

Scottsdale rallied to take a 48-47 lead with 7:40 left on a 3-pointer by SG Ross Hyel, who had just entered the game for the first time moments earlier. Mira Costa went back in front on a baseline drive by Chamberlain that made it 49-48 with 7:18 left.

Scottsdale took a 54-53 lead on a baseline jumper by PG Kevin Bowman with 4:07 left. Mira Costa went back in front when Chamberlain blocked a shot on the perimeter, corralled the rebound and took it in for a lay-up to make it 55-54 with just under three minutes to go. Scottsdale tied it when Ctr Ronnie Spoon, subbing for an injured SF Paris Oliver made one of two free throws with 2:18 left to make it 55-55.

Mira Costa took a 57-55 lead on a basket by Ctr Declan Daly off a pass from PG Dominique Moreno. After a free throw by Scottsdale SF B.J. Ray that made it 57-56, Chamberlain scored off a pass from SF Andre Warren with 1:07 left to give Mira Costa a 59-56 lead. SG Daniel Scroggins scored on a driving lay-up for Scottsdale with 45 seconds left to make it 59-58.

Scottsdale elected to just play defense and not foul Mira Costa, and the Artichokes got the ball back after a rebound by PF Dimitri Chonis. Scottsdale got the ball into the front court and called timeout with 4.1 seconds left. On the restart, the ball went to Ray in the right corner. He appeared to be bumped by Chamberlain, but the officials ruled incidental contact; Ray then heaved the ball off the side of the backboard as he fell out of bounds.

That gave Mira Costa the ball with 0.5 seconds left. Moreno wisely threw the ball into the frontcourt, where it was intercepted by Hyel, but his half-court desperation shot missed everything and might have even come after the final horn.

For Mira Costa, Boucharel had 13 pts, 7 rebs, 2 asts and a steal, and was named to the all-tournament team. Chamberlain came off the bench for 13 pts, 6 rebs, 2 asts and 2 blocked shots. PF Bryce Lenhart had 9 pts and 8 rebs, and Daly had 6 pts, a team-high 11 rebs and a game-high 6 blocked shots before fouling out with 1:34 left.

For Scottsdale, Ray had 13 pts, 5 rebs, 7 asts, a block and a steal and was named to the all-tournament team though he was just 3-for-18 from the floor on Sunday. Bowman had 12 pts. Oliver came off the bench and had 7 pts and a game-high 14 rebs plus 3 blocks and 3 steals.
