Canyons 90, Glendale 74

There was but a light drizzle outside but inside Marauder Gym it was raining threes as #14 Canyons drained 16 three-pointers to get past WSC-South rival Glendale in the 3rd Place game of the 61st Annual Gregg Anderson Memorial Tournament at Antelope Valley College.

Four of the five starters for Canyons (5-3) scored in double figures, and they also combined for 15 of those three-pointers. SF Lionel Poole came off the bench for the other, and it was hardly a coincidence that Canyons made 16 threes and won the game by 16 points.

Neither team led by more than four points until Canyons went on an 8-0 spurt to take a 30-20 lead after a pair of free throws by Ctr Ronald Harris with 6:31 left in the first half. The Cougars pushed their lead to a dozen after a driving lay-up by PG Terrez Scott and to 14 after a steal & lay-up by SG Jaylen Bland with 3:40 left before halftime.

Glendale cut the deficit to six points at 38-32 after a 3-point play by PF Mike Johnson, but Canyons pushed the lead to nine points at the half after a 3-pointer by Scott just before halftime.

Glendale (3-4) went on a 10-0 run early in the second half to cut the deficit to just four points at 49-45 just 4:21 in after a 3-point play by SG Mike Hicks.

But then Canyons pulled away, pushing the lead back to double digits after a steal, lay-up & traditional 3-point play by Scott with 12:11 left. A short jumper by SF David Horst made it 64-51. SF Temjae Singleton hit a 3-pointer, was fouled and converted the free throw for a 4-point play with 10:50 left to make it 72-56.

A free throw by Bland after a steal by Horst made it 75-58 with 9:11 left, and a three-pointer by Scott with just over seven minutes to go made it 78-58. Canyons led by double digits the rest of the way.

For Canyons, Bland had 26 pts, including 5 threes, plus 3 rebs, 3 asts and 4 steals. SF Tyler Barber had 17 pts, including 4 threes, plus a team-high 12 rebs as well as 2 blocks and 2 steals. Singleton had 15 pts, including 4 threes, plus 3 rebs, 3 asts, 2 steals and a block. Scott had 13 pts, including 2 threes, plus 2 steals and a game-high 7 asts.

For Glendale, Hicks had a superb game wtih 22 pts on 7-for-9 from the floor and 6-for-6 from the line, and added 5 rebs, 4 asts and a steal, all without committing a turnover. Johnson, a Palmdale HS alumn likely playing his final game in the Antelope Valley, had 17 pts. Ctr Gor Plavchyan had 13 pts, 15 rebs, 3 asts, 3 blocks and 3 steals and was named to the all-tournament team.
