Los Medanos ended the first half with a 14-0 run, breaking open a close game, and led by double digits the entire second half in a 65-53 win over Shasta on the consolation championship of the 2012 Kris Kringle Classic December 22nd at Santa Rosa Junior College.
Los Medanos (9-4) trailed, 28-27, with just under five minutes left in the first half when SF Nick Blount made one of two frree throws to tie the game. But Blount followed that with a 3-pointer with just under four minutes left in the half, and that started the 14-0 run.
PF Marquis Arron scored on a runner, and SG Drew Cones hit a 3-pointer to make it 36-28. Then Arron completed a rather unique 3-point play by banking in the initial shot and then banking in the free throw to make it 39-28 with 1:22 left. Arron then threw an outlet pass to Cones for another score to make it 41-28 at the break.
The second half started slowly as neither team scored until Shasta's SF Montie Luenen hit a 3-pointer about five minutes into the second half to make it a 10-point game. But that would be as close as Shasta (3-11) would get. A 3-pointer by PG Patrick Lefiti pushed Los Medanos' lead to 54-34 with just under 12 minutes left, and the closest the Knights got after that was the final score.
Shasta began the game by making its first three shots from the floor to take an early 7-2 lead. But the Mustangs took an 8-7 lead on a hook shot by Ctr DeMahan Miller, and the lead went back and forth the rest of the half until Los Medanos' 14-0 run.
SG Kelse Jones came off the bench for Los Medanos to lead all scorers with 15 pts, including 3 three-pointers. Cones had 12 pts and 5 asts while Lefiti had 8 pts and a game-high 7 asts. Ctr William Leeks had 10 pts off the bench. Arron had 9 pts and a team-high 7 rebs.
For Shasta, Ctr Derrick Barrie had a team-high 12 pts and a game-high 8 rebs. SG Stevonte Young had 10 pts and PF Anthony Eastman had 9 pts, 6 rebs, 3 asts and 2 steals.
