Ctr Josh Guillory scored 23 pts and grabbed 11 rebs to lead Glendale (6-7) to a 75-67 win over East LA (5-9) in a non-conference game in Glendale Wednesday night.
Glendale won despite seeing a 15-point second-half lead evaporate as East LA rallied to tie the game at 60 with 4:35 remaining. But then Guillory scored 9 of the Vaqueros' next 11 points to put Glendale back in control of the game.
Glendale never trailed, taking a 6-0 lead in the early going as East LA missed its first 9 shots from the floor and saw SF Lester Keys head to the bench with an apparent knee injury. The Vaqueros pushed the lead into double digits after a steal & basket by PG Cory Davis made it 24-13 and led by as many as 13 points in the first half. At the break, Glendale had a 37-26 lead.
When the second half began, Glendale quickly expanded its lead when SG Markus Monroe drained a 3-pointer to make it 42-28. The Vaquero advantage eventually reached 15 points at 49-34 with 13:36 left after a 3-pointer by PF Peter Newell and a short jumper by Guillory.
But then East LA rallied, tying the game at 60 on SG Jeremy Gerardo's 3-pointer with 4:35 left. Glendale then went back in front when Guillory scored from the lane and, on the next time down the court, Monroe made 2 FTs to make it 64-60 with 3:21 left. But PG Darren Lew nailed a 3-pointer, was fouled and converted the free throw for a 4-pt play to again tie the score at 64-64.
After that, however, Guillory led Glendale to the win. A 3-pointer by the sophomore from Lynwood made it 67-64. After a free throw by East LA Ctr Ralph Nevarez made it 67-65, Guillory scored on a reverse lay-up to make it 69-65 with a minute left. Then Guillory grabbed a rebound, was fouled and made a pair of free throws with 36 seconds left to make it 71-67.
Davis made four free throws in the final 24 seconds to seal the win for Glendale.
Guillory finished with game-highs of 23 pts, 11 rebs and 3 blocked shots. Monroe managed 13 pts despite battling foul trouble, and he eventually fouled out in the final minute. Davis had a superb game with 10 pts, 6 rebs, 5 asts, 4 steals and just one turnover.
For East LA, Nevarez led the way with 13 pts and 9 rebs. Lew had 12 pts and 7 rebs. SF Justin Wallace came off the bench to add 11 pts and 7 rebs.
