SF LaVon Myers and PF Julion Thurmond each had 18 pts and Ctr Christin Jones scored all 12 of his points in the second half as Compton overcame an 11-point first-half deficit to defeat host Oxnard, 75-70, Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference game.
Oxnard jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the early going, only to see Compton rally to tie the score at 11. But Oxnard went back into the lead, pushing the margin to 11 points at 31-20 after a coast-to-coast lay-up by PG Ryan McLucas with 5:47 left in the first half.
But Compton rallied to close the gap to a single point at halftime, at 33-32, and took the lead early in the second half. A driving lay-up by PG Jacob Marks sparked an 11-2 run that saw Compton build a 43-35 advantage.
Oxnard came back from that deficit, taking a 60-59 lead on a 3-pointer by SF Craig Lee with four minutes left. But Myers answered right back for Compton, draining a three of his own 16 seconds later to put the Tartars ahead, 62-60.
And this time, Compton never surrendered the lead. A short jumper by Jones and a putback basket by SG Keith Lawson after a steal by Marks made it 66-60. Oxnard got within two points several times, but never quite pulled even.
A pair of free throws by McLucas made it 68-66 Compton with 1:12 left. But SF Norman Tidwell scored from the lane to make it 70-66. Oxnard got a putback basket from PF James Ennis to make it 70-68 with 46 seconds left. But Marks hit a jumper from the right elbow with 15 seconds left to again make it a 4-point game at 72-68. A putback basket by Lee made it 72-70 with 7.2 seconds left.
Oxnard had no choice but to foul, sending Myers to the line with 4.5 seconds left. Myers made the first free throw to make it 73-70, but missed the second, giving Oxnard a chance for the tie. The Condors called timeout with 4.1 seconds left to set up a final play.
On the inbounds play, however, Jones stole the inbounds pass near midcourt. He got the ball to Thurmond, who made a pair of free throws with 1.1 seconds left to make it 75-70 and clinch the win.
Oxnard's McLucas led all scorers with 23 pts, and SG Philip Holmes had 19 pts and 11 rebs. Ennis just missed a triple-double with 10 pts, 13 rebs and 9 asts.
