PG Curtis Dunwoody scored 20 pts, including a game-tying three at the end of regulation and a game-winning three at the buzzer in OT, to lead host Canyons (7-3) past LA Trade Tech (4-5), 83-80, in a first-round game at the COC Holiday Classic.
Trade Tech led much of the game, and held a 7-point advantage with under 3 minutes to go in regulation. And after C. Dunwoody's game-tying three with 14 seconds left, Trade Tech had a chance to win at the end of regulation, but PG Jerry Jackson's 15-foot jumper bounced off the rim. In OT, COC had an 80-77 lead before SG Chanson Smyth's three with just under a minute left tied the game. Then each team had an empty possession, setting the stage for C. Dunwoody's dramatic game-winner.
SG Alex Dunwoody was among the other standouts for Canyons, finishing with 16 pts including a pair of threes. Ctr Andrew Bruckner had 15 pts, 7 rebs and 4 blocks for the Cougars. And PF Durell added 16 pts and 3 rebs, with most of that coming before he was disqualified with his second technical foul (he later re-entered the game for about a minute, grabbing 1 rebound, before the officials – with a little help from the Trade Tech coaches – realized he had been disqualified). SF Carlton Spencer had a rough night shooting, going 3-for-16, and had a scary-looking knee injury late in the second half. But Spencer not only returned from the injury but found ways to help the team win: his 5 steals and 7 assists, including a dish on the game-winning shot, were game-highs.
Trade Tech lost despite 23 pts and 10 rebs from Jackson, both of which were game-highs, and 5 asts. Smyth had 21 pts, 6 rebs and 5 asts. And SF Louis Hamilton had 17 pts and 5 asts.
