COC Holiday Tourney - Day 1
PF Wendell White scored 24 pts and grabbed 10 rebs to lead #4 Antelope Valley (11-2) to a win over Big Bend of Washington (8-3) in the marquee game on the first day of the COC Holiday Classic.
AVC got strong performances from their pair of backup PGs, who were standing in for starter Tyronne Miller, who was not available. Joe Dickson started and Tyme Hodges also saw significant action and the pair combined for 21 pts and 14 asts. Hodges picked up the Marauders when he entered in the first half, dishing out 4 assists in his first few minutes to help AVC overcome an early 16-11 deficit and take a 20-16 lead. And Dickson scored 8 pts and had a nice feed to help AVC take a 56-43 lead early in the second half.
Big Bend led early on and trailed by just 4 at the half due mainly to their outside shooting. SF Brandon Nielsen scored 21 first-half points including 5 threes as the Runnin' Vikes hit 8 threes and trailed 45-41 at the break. But Nielsen and the rest of the Vikes cooled down in the second half and AVC pulled away, sparked by Dickson's early spurt.
SF Carlton Clay added 20 pts including 5 threes for AVC, and PF Curtis McHenry came off the bench to contribute 11 pts and 9 boards. Dickson scored 14 of his 17 pts in the second half as the Marauders built a solid lead. For the game, AVC shot 53% and made 10 threes.
Big Bend was led by Nielsen, who had 24 pts including 6 threes. Ctr Jeff Coffman had a huge game with 20 pts and 13 rebs. SG Bryce Pendleton came off the bench and had a very strong game, making 7 of 11 shots for 18 pts including 4 threes.
