COC Holiday Tourney - Day 1
In the nightcap, host Canyons (5-6) topped Palomar (1-8), 73-58. SG Curtis Dunwoody led the way with 21 pts including 5 threes. SF Carlton Spender added 12 pts and Ctr Andrew Morris had 11. SF Cedric Davis led all rebounders with 11.
Palomar missed 9 of its first 10 shots to fall behind 10-2 on 2 FTs by Davis, 2 threes by Dunwoody and a steal and dunk by Davis. But Ctr Chris Nickolei scored on a couple of post moves to help the Comets rally and tie the score at 10. From that point on, however, the rest of the half belonged to COC, which built a 39-21 lead at halftime.
But when the second half started, it was COC that struggled, missing 14 of its first 15 shots to allow Palomar to cut the margin to 9. However, PF Brett Bissett scored on a putback to end the drought, and when Palomar closed the margin to 7 at 45-38, COC pulled away again on baskets by Morris and Bissett. COC's lead was never less than 9 the rest of the way.
Nickolei led Palomar with 18 pts and 7 rebs in a strong performance, even though he didn't start. PG Michael Perez scored 12 pts including 3 threes, and SF Charles Lawrence added 10.
