Canyons 93, Barstow 63

Canyons (6-10) led wire to wire in a 93-63 romp past still-winless Barstow (0-12) in the final game of the first day of the 19th Annual Cougar Holiday Classic Saturday night in Santa Clarita.

PG Terrez Scott assisted on Canyons’ first 4 baskets as the Cougars raced out to a 9-4 lead in the first two minutes of the game. Barstow stayed close for a while, trailing just 18-16 at one point, but never quite drew even.

And after that, Canyons pulled away, outscoring the Vikings, 34-8 the rest of the first half to lead 52-24 at the break. And the run continued in the second half, which Canyons began with a 14-1 run to push the lead to 41 points at 66-25 with 14:51 left in the game.

Five players scored in double figures for Canyons, led by Ctr Justin Smith and his 16 pts, 8 rebs and 4 asts. PF Brannon Bradley had 13 pts, 8 rebs and 4 asts. SG Jason Holzwarth had 13 pts, including 3 threes. SG C.J. Atkins and SF Behrang Behjoo each came off the bench and scored 10 pts. Scott had just 3 pts but dished out a game-high 9 asts.

For Barstow, PF Galander Abdelrahman led the way with 15 pts, 4 rebs, 4 asts, 4 blocks and 2 steals, though he also had 9 turnovers. He was the only Viking to score in double figures. SG Maurice McDonald had 9 pts, 3 asts and 3 steals.

With the win, Canyons advances to the winners’ bracket semifinal and will face #13 Pasadena Sunday evening at 8 pm. Barstow will face Big Bend of Moses Lake, WA, in a consolation semifinal Sunday at 4 pm.
