Ctr Adrian Session scored 21 pts, all in the second half, and PG Bryce Layne had a double-double with 16 pts and 11 asts as LA Southwest (7-7) edged West LA (2-8), 80-75, in the first game of the Cougar Holiday Classic Sunday afternoon in Santa Clarita.

Session, benched for the entire first half, made 9 of 12 shots from the floor, including a pair of baskets with 4:20 and 4 minutes left in the game that gave Southwest the lead. West got within three points a couple of times after that, but never quite pulled even. And Session’s final basket, on a feed from Layne, made it 80-75 with 20 seconds left and clinched the victory.

West had the lead for much of the first half, opening a 19-14 advantage after a 3-point play by PG Terry Beasley with 12:22 left in the half. The lead went back and forth several times until Session’s basket after a pass from Layne gave Southwest a 69-68 lead with 4:20 left. Then Session scored on a putback with four minutes left to make it 71-68.

West got within three points at 74-71 after a 3-pointer by SG Rodney Blackmon with 2:58 left, but a pair of baskets by Session, both assisted by Layne, pushed Southwest’s lead back to seven at 78-71 with 2:12 left. West got back within three at 78-75 on a steal & basket by Beasley, and even had the chance to tie it with just over a minute left, but missed a pair of 3-pointers. Session’s basket from Layne with 20 seconds left finally sealed the win for Southwest.

In addition to Session and Layne, SF Marsellus Gray also scored in double figures with 14 pts. Jones had just 4 pts but dished out 7 asts.
