Seven players had 3-pointers and five players scored in double figures as #3 Chaffey (15-2) used its depth and shooting skills to get past West LA (9-8), 88-68, in a semifinal of the 19th Annual Cougar Holiday Classic Sunday night in Santa Clarita.
SF Lamar Williams set the tone for the night, knocking down a pair of threes in the early moments of the game to give Chaffey a lead it would hold the rest of the game. Williams' second three made it 6-4 after West LA had taken an early 4-3 lead on baskets by Ctr Shakir Johnson and SF Chris Williams.
After that, Chaffey just kept making threes. The Panthers led 20-11 at one point with 6 threes, before a driving lay-up by PF Anthony Soares, Chaffey's first 2-point field goal of the night, pushed the lead into double figures at 22-11 with 12:01 left in the first half.
Moments later, SF Justin Domino drained a three to make it 27-15. He was the sixth Panther to make a 3-pointer in the game. Late in the first half, PF Nickalas Turner became the seventh, making a pair of threes just before the break, at which point Chaffey led, 42-30.
When the second half began, Chaffey extended its lead to 20 points, just as it did in the first round win over Ventura. Another Turner three made it 45-30. After a lay-up by West LA SG Jason Pruitt, Turner drained another three to make it 48-32. Then Soares grabbed a steal and fed SF Winston Robinson for a lay-up to make it 50-32. A basket by Robinson on an inbounds play from Turner made it 52-32.
West LA threatened just once, cutting the Chaffey lead to 11 points at 69-58 after four straight points by Johnson with just under 9 minutes left. But less than a minute later, Johnson picked up his 5th foul on a charge and left the game. And Chaffey slowly pulled away again to the 20-point win.
Turner led Chaffey in scoring for the second straight game, pouring in 17 points, including 5 threes. Robinson just missed a double-double with 14 points and 9 rebounds. Williams, SG Anthony Cammon and Soares each had 10 points; Soares had an especially strong game with 8 rebounds and 3 steals as well. Overall, Chaffey finished with 12 threes, a strong contrast to West LA, which had none.
For West LA, Chris Williams had 14 pts to lead the way. Johnson had a double-double with 13 pts and a game-high 11 rebs despite battling foul trouble much of the game. PF Josh Jordan also had a double-double with 12 pts and 10 rebs.
With the win, Chaffey improves to 15-2 with its 9th straight win, and will face host Canyons in the championship game Monday at 6 pm. West LA falls to 9-8 and will face Pasadena in the Third Place game at 4 pm.
