LA Southwest 76, Cerritos 54

LA Southwest (13-7) got 25 pts from SF Chris Smith and overcame a slow start to wallop SCC-South rival Cerritos (8-8), 76-54, in the consolation final of the SJCC Holiday Tournament at Evergreen Valley College Saturday afternoon.

It wasn't a conference game, but Southwest made a strong statement to the rest of the SCC South that the Cougars are the team to beat this season.

Cerritos began the game with an 8-0 run, beginning with a basket from PF Aaron Thompson in the opening seconds, followed by a pair of threes from SG Jerell Elder. And Southwest began the game by missing its first 6 shots from the floor before a steal & lay-up by Smith. Moments later, Cerritos stretched its lead to 11-2 after a FG+FT 3-point play by SF Aaron King.

From that point on, Southwest dominated. The Cougars rallied to tie the game 18-18 on a steal & basket by PG Kendrick Harris, and went ahead moments later on a 3-pointer by Ctr Jejuan Brown. The lead went into double figures at 35-23 after a three by Smith. At halftime, Southwest held a 15-point lead at 44-29.

And when the second half began, Southwest continued its run, pushing the lead to 22 at 51-29 on another three by Smith and to 24 at 56-32 shortly after that on another three by Smith. The lead reached as much as 26 a t 71-45 with just under six minutes left.

Smith finished 10 of 17 from the floor for his game-high 25 pts. Brown had 11 pts and 8 rebs, and was named to the all-tournament team. SG Jenero Jefferson came off the bench to add 11 pts and 6 asts. PF Tylon Bickman had 6 pts and a game-high 11 rebs, and PF Tremayne Johnson game the Cougars a jolt of energy off the bench with 8 pts and 10 rebs. And Harris had a strong game with 7 pts, 8 asts and 3 steals.

For Cerritos, Thompson led the way with 14 pts and 7 rebs. Elder was the only other Falcon to reach double figures, finishing with 12 pts on 4 threes. PG Wayne Chapman had 8 pts and a team-high 5 asts, all of which came in the first few minutes. For the game, Cerritos shot 30.6% from the floor and had 30 turnovers.
