PF Chris Curtis had 17 pts, earning All-Tournament honors, as Orange Coast (6-9) edged host Canyons (9-7), 67-64, in the consolation final of the 20th Annual Cougar Holiday Classic Tuesday afternoon in Santa Clarita.
Curtis was one of three Pirates to score in double figures, and Ctr Stefan Thomassen had 9 blocked shots, but the win wasn't secure until PG George Fields blocked a would-be game-tying 3-point shot at the final buzzer.
Canyons opened a 7-point lead at 12-5 early on, and led by 8 points at 29-21 with 5:09 left in the first quarter. Orange Coast rallied each time, but never took the lead, and Canyons extended its advantage back to five points at 35-30 after a short jumper by SG Rasheem Harris in the final seconds of the first half.
Canyons got a 3-pointer from Harris and a putback basket from PF Brannon Bradley to push its lead to 10 points at 40-30 with 17:30 left in the game.
But Orange Coast rallied again, and this time the Pirates took the lead on a pair of free throws by Curtis with 10:10 left that made it 49-48. The OCC lead reached seven points at 60-53 after a short jumper by SF Alvin Jackson with just over five minutes left.
Orange Coast still held a 6-point lead in the final minute until SF Rendon Dominguez hit a 3-pointer with 35 seconds left to make it 67-64. Canyons sent PG Loren McLean to the free throw line with 14 seconds left, but McLean missed the front end of a one-and-one, giving Canyons the chance to tie. After a timeout, Canyons got the ball into the corner to Rendon Dominguez, but Fields blocked his shot as the buzzer sounded, allowing OCC to hold on for the win.
Curtis led Orange Coast with 17 pts and 6 rebs. Fields and SF Chad Delaney each had 12 pts, 3 asts and 3 steals. Thomassen had 8 pts, 6 rebs and the 9 blocked shots. Jackson came off the bench for 7 pts, 4 rebs, 4 asts and 3 steals.
