Chaffey 89, Mira Costa 62

SF Matt Wallace had 25 pts, including 4 threes, to earn tournament MVP honors as #11 Chaffey (9-4) trounced Mira Costa (8-5), 89-62, in the championship game of the 20th annual Cougar Holiday Classic at College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita.

It was Chaffey's third straight impressive win in the tournament, following a 26-point thrashing of Orange Coast in the first round and an 18-point romp past LA Southwest in the semifinal Monday night.

In Tuesday's final, Chaffey pulled away in the last ten minutes of the first half, putting together a 22-5 run to take a 40-22 lead late in the half. The Panthers extended the lead beyond 20 points less than six minutes into the second half, and led by at least 16 points the rest of the way.

Mira Costa got a 3-pointer and a single free throw from SG Chris Raybon to take the 4-0 lead in the game's early moments. Chaffey rallied to take an 8-7 lead on a basket by SG Anthony Cammon on an inbounds play from PG Deondre Broadie with 15:15 left in the first half, and led the rest of the way.

Mira Costa trailed by just a point at 18-17 before Chaffey pulled away for good. A 3-pointer by Wallace pushed the margin to 10 at 30-20, and the margin reached 18 at 40-22 on a putback basket by PF Steffon Neal late in the half. A 3-point play by Raybon with 21 seconds left brought Mira Costa within 15 at 40-25 at the half.

Mira Costa got within 13 points after another Raybon 3-pointer that made it 45-32 early in the second half. But Chaffey pushed the lead to 21 when Wallace scored on a putback following a steal by PG Trone Jackson, and then Jackson stole the ball back at midcourt moments later and went in for the lay-up to make it 59-36 with 13:46 left.

Both teams substituted extensively after that, and Mira Costa got within 16 points at 65-49 with just under 7 minutes left after two more threes by Raybon. But then Wallace re-entered the game for Chaffey, and the lead went back to 25 on a 3-pointer by Wallace that made it 75-50.

Wallace finished 9 of 16 from the floor for his 25 pts, and he also had 25 pts in Chaffey's semifinal win over LA Southwest. Cammon had 13 pts and 4 asts, and joined Wallace on the All-Tournament team. Ctr Mo Hughley had 13 pts and 8 rebs, and Broadie had 13 pts and 3 asts. Jackson had 6 pts and a game-high 8 asts plus 3 steals. Overall, Chaffey had 10 players score. And most remarably, the fast-paced Panthers had just 6 turnovers for the entire game.

For Mira Costa, Raybon had 7 threes and a game-high 27 pts, earning a spot on the All-Tournament team. SF Tony Cali had 10 pts, 4 rebs and 4 asts, and was also named to the All-Tournament team.
