Santa Barbara 80, Butte 69

The backcourt combination of PG David Lane and SG Mark Keeten combined for 47 points and Santa Barbara (7-12) held off a late rally from Butte (13-6) to upset the #12-N Roadrunners and capture the consolation championship of the Hancock Holiday Classic Tuesday afternoon in Santa Maria.

Lane had an absolutely remarkable game with 27 pts, including 3 threes, plus 7 rebs, 6 asts and 4 steals to lead the way for the Vaqueros. And Keeten added 20 pts and 6 rebs, and was named to the all-tournament team.

The Vaqueros played a near-flawless first half, building a 42-22 halftime lead and holding Butte to just 28% shooting. SBCC built a 15-5 lead in the first ten-plus minutes as Butte missed 15 of its first 17 shots, and that trend continued as the half continued as the Roadrunners seemed lost without standout SG Devon Hills, who missed the game due to injury.

But in the second half, Butte rallied, cutting the margin to single digits at 59-50 on a 3-pointer by SF Brett Smyth with 7:50 left. Then a basket by SGDonavan Plunkett made it 59-52 with just under 7 minutes left, and consecutive baskets by SF Makana Rice made it 59-56 with 5:45 left

SBCC, however, pulled away again, thanks to their dynamic backcourt duo. Lane fed Keeten for a fast-break lay-up to make it 61-56, and then stole the ball near midcourt, went in for the lay-up, drew the foul and made the free throw to make it 64-56.

Butte stayed close into the final minute, cutting the lead to 8 at 72-64 on a three by Plunkett with one minute left. But in the final minute Keeten made 4 free throws and PF Ezra Fantl made two free throws to seal the win for Santa Barbara.

Butte was led by its Slovakian inside duo of PF Pavol Losonsky and Ctr Peter Simek, both of whom posted double-doubles. Losonsky finished with 15 pts and 12 rebs while Simek had 14 pts, 12 boards and 2 blocked shots. Plunkett added 15 pts including 3 threes. Smyth had a strong all-around game with 8 pts, 7 rebs and 5 asts. And Rice had just 4 pts, 5 rebs, 3 asts, 2 steals and a block, but his energy and activity were a big part of Butte’s second-half rally.
