Miramar 87, Moorpark 80

Miramar (10-5) celebrated New Year’s Eve in the afternoon, edging #11 Moorpark (10-5), 87-80, in a 2 pm matinee at Raider Pavilion. The Jets shot 57% from the floor for the game, including a sizzling 71% in a second half in which they led every step of the way.

Miramar, which inexplicably dropped out of the regional rankings this week despite not playing a game, started the game strong, jumping out to a 12-2 lead in the opening minutes. Moorpark then went on a 15-2 run to go ahead, 17-14, and the lead went back and forth the rest of the half. Moorpark had a 33-31 lead after a 3-pointer by SF Matt Hornbuckle, but Miramar got a pair of free throws from SF Chase Fraser and a basket by PF Nate Easterman to take a 35-33 lead at halftime.

And Miramar would lead the rest of the way. The Jets pushed the lead into double digits when PF Steve Jones scored on a putback, was fouled and converted the free throw for a 3-point play that made it 56-45. Then came a 3-pointer from SG Ian Larsson that pushed the margin to 14 at 59-45.

Moorpark never quite overcame that deficit, but the Raiders rallied to within a point at 70-69 after a 3-pointer from PF B.J. Wortham with just under 6 minutes remaining. After that, a pair of free throws by Ctr Pat Eveland, a single free throw by Steve Jones and a basket by Eveland on a feed from Larsson made it 75-69.

Moorpark continued to stay close and trailed by just 6 at 85-79 when PG Dwight Jones was fouled attempting a 3-point shot with 15.5 seconds left. But Jones made just one of his three shots. And moments later, after Steve Jones came away with the ball after the last missed free throw, Dwight Jones fouled him, fouling out of the game. Then Steve Jones made a pair of free throws for Miramar, making it 87-80 and clinching the win for the Jets.

For Miramar, Steve Jones led the way with 26 pts, 24 of which came in the second half, plus 9 rebs and 4 steals. Larsson had a tremendous game, just missing a triple-double with 23 pts, 11 rebs and 8 asts. Eveland added 16 pts and PG Bryant Taylor just missed a double-double with 9 pts and 11 rebs, and also had 5 asts.

Hornbuckle led the Raiders with 16 pts, including 4 threes. Ctr Michael Rodgers had 15 pts and SG Shane Foster had 11 pts. Dwight Jones added 9 pts plus a team-high 7 asts. Moorpark was without Head Coach Remy McCarthy (back surgery); Associate Coach Patrick Cady was at the helm in his place.
