Columbia 83, Yuba 82 (OT)

Columbia hit 16 3-pointers, including 7 from SF Rafe King, to stun #2-N Yuba, 83-82, in overtime in the first round of the 76th Annual Modesto JC tourney on Wednesday.

Despite all the 3-pointers, it was a lay-up by SG Marcus Junior with 1:08 left in overtime that proved to be the winning basket for Columbia (6-4) as well as the final points of the game. Yuba (4-2) had a couple chances to take the lead late but PF Floyd Wormley missed a pair of free throws with 13.9 seconds left and PG Desmond Butler missed a contested jumper as the final horn sounded.

Yuba started out well enough, taking a 24-13 lead midway through the first half. But Columbia rallied, tying the score at 26 on a 3-pointer by King with 5:28 left in the half. King scored off an outlet pass from PF Tige Wingo to give Columbia a 31-29 lead, and Junior hit a 3-pointer moments later to make it 34-29. Yuba Ctr Jaysen Williams answered with a 3-pointer to cut Columbia's lead to 34-32 at the half.

In the second half, Yuba again started out well, tying the game on a pair of free throws by Wormley just 13 seconds into the half and taking a 38-35 lead on a 3-pointer by PG Darrell Polee Jr.. A slam dunk by SG Chris Smith after a steal by Williams made it 51-45 with 12:40 left. A 3-pointer by Butler made it 54-45 with about 12 minutes to go.

Columbia rallied again, tying the scored on a 3-pointer by Junior that made it 62-62 with 4:43 remaining. Yuba went back in front and led, 69-62, after a basket by Williams with about 3 minutes to play, but Columbia rallied again to trail by just 2 at 73-71 after a 3-pointer by King with just over a minute left.

Yuba had a chance to strengthen its lead when Williams went to the free throw line with 44.5 seconds left, but he made just one of the two shots. That made it 74-71. Then Columbia tied the game moments later when SG Daniel Radford made a 3-pointer with 28.6 seconds left. Yuba held the ball for a last-second chance to win, but Polee missed a contested jumper at the horn, sending the game to overtime.

In overtime, Columbia took a 79-78 lead on a 3-pointer by Junior, the Claimjumpers' 16th of the game. But Yuba tied the score on a free throw by Williams, and took an 82-79 lead on a 3-pointer by Polee with 2:05 left.

Columbia nearly tied the game moments later when King hit a long jumper from just inside the 3-point line to make it 82-81. Then Junior scored on his lay-up with 1:08 left for the winning score.

For Columbia, King finished with 28 pts, including the 7 threes, and 3 asts. Junior had 24 pts, including 4 threes, plus 6 rebs, 7 asts and 2 steals. PG Robert Orantes scored 12 pts on 4 three-pointers and dished out a game-high 8 asts. Wingo had 9 pts and 8 rebs. Ctr Ian Merzwinski came off the bench for just 2 pts but also grabbed a team-high 9 rebs.

For Yuba, Williams came off the bench for a huge game with 32 pts, 18 rebs, 2 blocks, an assist and a steal. Butler also came off the bench and had 14 pts, 7 rebs, 5 asts and 4 steals. The Utah State-bound Smith was held scoreless in the first half, but finished with 13 pts, 8 rebs, 3 asts and 2 steals. Polee had 11 pts.
