Ctr Jaycob Velasco had 16 pts and SG Brenden Glapion came off the bench for 15 as #9-North Cosumnes River downed Reedley 72-64 in the first round of the 76th Annual Modesto JC tourney Tuesday.
It's unusual for a team to win when its two leading scorers for the season combine to make just 7 of 29 field goal attempts, but that's exactly what happened for Cosumnes River (6-1) against Reedley. Velasco made up for his 12 misses by grabbing 18 rebounds, more than twice as many as any other player in the game. And SG A.J. Bridges was just 1-for-11 from the floor but cashed in from the line, making 11 free throws and finishing with 13 pts while adding 4 asts and 5 steals.
In fact, it was the free throws for Cosumnes River along with the accompanying foul trouble for Reedley (3-4) that was the difference. CRC had an NBA-like total of 32 made free throws from 44 trips to the line for the game. And the Tigers saw their starting center, Eddie Ramirez - probably the only Reedley player physically capable of banging for rebounds with Velasco - and top scorer SF Andre Frazier both spend considerable time on the bench in the first half after each picked up his 3rd foul.
Cosumnes River jumped out to a quick 13-4 lead on the strength of Velasco, who had 9 pts and 6 rebs to that point in the game, by which time Ramirez was on the bench with 2 fouls. The Hawks pushed their lead to 13 points at 19-6 with 9:17 left in the first half.
Frazier hit a jumper for Reedley to make it 19-8, but then he picked up his 2nd and 3rd fouls in quick succession and headed to the bench. Then Ramirez picked up his 3rd foul as well.
And Cosumnes River continued to extend the lead, with PF T.J. Williams scoring off a pass from Velasco to make it 23-8. One 3-pointer by SG Mitchell Love made it 26-10, and another made it 29-11 late in the first half.
The score at halftime was 30-15, and Cosumnes River continued to lead by double digits more most of the second half. A 3-pointer by Glapion made it 43-28. A basket by Glapion off a pass from Bridges pushed the lead to 16 points at 56-40 midway through the second half, and Ramirez picked up his 4th foul moments later. A 3-pointer by Glapion made it 60-42 with just under 8 minutes to play.
Reedley mounted a desperate rally in the final minutes, closing the gap to 8 points but never really threatening to pull even. A steal & lay-up by SG Nate Galvan made it 68-58 with just under a minute to go. Then Frazier went coast-to-coast for a lay-up that made it 68-60 with 26.5 seconds left. In the last 24.9 seconds Velasco made 3 free throws and Bridges made one to help make sure the Hawks held on for the win.
For Cosumnes River, Velasco had a team-high 16 pts and a game-high 18 rebs. Glapion had 15 pts and Bridges had 13. Williams had 12 pts and 7 rebs.
For Reedley, Frazier led all scorers with 22 pts on 10-for-18 from the floor while adding 2 rebs, 2 steals and an assist. SG Demetri Randolph had 13 pts and PG Walter Orr had 10 pts, 4 rebs, 4 asts and 2 steals. SF Kyle Smith had 6 pts and a team-high 8 rebs. Amazingly, despite the foul trouble, none of the Tigers fouled out, though Ramirez finished with just 6 pts and 3 rebs in his limited minutes.
