Canyons 75, Glendale 70

SF Rafael Love had 22 pts and 5 asts as Canyons beat Glendale, 75-70, in the consolation final at the 2011 Gregg Anderson Memorial Tournament Sunday afternoon at Antelope Valley College.

For the second straight year, WSC-South rivals Canyons and Glendale met in a non-conference game on the final day of this tournament and, for the second straight year, Canyons came away with the win. For his game-high point totals, Love was named to the all-tournament team.

Canyons (4-4) led much of the game and all of the second half, though unlike last year Glendale (3-4) stayed close and got within two points with just under eight minutes to go. Then Canyons pushed the margin back to 10, and led by at least seven points until the final seconds of the game.

Early on, COC held a narrow advantage until Glendale took a 21-20 lead on a 3-pointer by SG Chris Kapooshian with 8:22 left in the first half. The lead went back and forth until Canyons took a 31-27 lead on a pair of jumpers by Love, and the Cougars pushed the margin to nine points at the half after a 3-pointer by PG Brian Harris rolled in with just under a minute to go before the break.

Canyons pushed the lead to 13 points at 49-36 after a pull-up jumper by SG Brad Wyche and a lay-up by SF Lionel Poole early in the half. At that point it looked like Canyons was on the way to another easy win like last year's 89-68 drubbing.

However, this time around Glendale cut the margin to single digits on a jumper by Ctr Sooren Derboghosian-Pakajaki that made it 56-48, and got within six points at 56-50 on a baseline floater by PG Nick Rhodes. The Vaqueros rallied to within two points at 58-56 on a basket by SG Nate Bryant following a steal by Rhodes.

But Canyons pushed the margin back to ten points on a Wyche 3-pointer that made it 67-57 with 4:45 left, and the Cougars were never seriously threatened after that. The lead was at least nine points until Glendale got a 3-pointer play from Rhodes in the final minute to make it 75-68, and a pair of free throws from Bryant with 3.7 seconds left that made it 75-70 and closed out the scoring.

Love had 22 pts, including 16 in the first half, 4 rebs and 5 asts. Wyche, who made the all-tournament team last year, had a strong game with 13 pts on 4-for-6 from the floor, including 3 threes, plus 4 rebs and 4 asts. PF Wesley Bartole had 12 pts and 7 rebs, and Ctr Ronald Harris had 9 pts and a team-high 8 rebs.

For Glendale, Rhodes had 13 pts, 5 rebs, 7 asts and 3 steals and earned a spot on the all-tournament team. SG Robert Henry had 12 pts and Derboghosian-Pakajaki had 12 pts and 7 rebs. Bryant came off the bench for 10 pts and Ctr Marquis Brooks came off the bench for 4 pts and a team-high 8 rebs.
