PG Vance Lawrence had 26 pts, including 6 threes, to lead #13 Long Beach (6-4) to a 57-47 win over Saddleback (4-6) Wednesday at the Wells Fargo Holiday Tournament at Riverside College.
Long Beach began the game on a 9-0 run and led wire-to-wire, but Saddleback stayed close into the final minute. The Vikings led by 10 at halftime and scored 6 of the games first 8 points in the second half to open a 14-point lead at 33-19, but then the Gauchos went on a 14-2 run to draw within two points at 35-33.
Long Beach got a pair of threes from Lawrence plus a steal & basket by PF Wynton Johnson to push the lead back to 12 at 47-35, but Saddleback again rallied to cut the margin to 6 points at 53-47 with 1:01 remaining. But then a pair of free throws by Lawrence with 33.7 seconds left made it 55-47. And then Ctr Cameron Herbert stole the ball in the Saddleback backcourt and got it to SF Ian Pinckney, who threw down a dunk to make it 57-47 and clinch the win.
Pinckney finished with 8 pts plus game-highs of 11 rebs and 4 asts for Long Beach. Ctr Shantell Norman had 12 pts and 6 rebs. SF Matt Richard sat out after having been assessed two technical fouls in LBCCs last game.
For Saddleback, PG Charlie Oriel led the way with 16 pts, 5 rebs, 3 asts and 4 steals. SG Darryl Best had 9 pts. But the Gauchos shot an ice-cold 29.8% from the floor for the game.
