Ctr Daryl Jones had 23 pts to lead host Rio Hondo (3-6) to a 65-49 win over LA Harbor (2-8) in the first round of the Rio Hondo Classic Thursday afternoon in Whittier.
Rio Hondo never trailed, and held a 9-point advantage at halftime, but led by just 3 until SF Jawan Davis drained a three with 4:11 left to make it 53-47. Then neither team scored for over two minutes until Jones scored after a feed from Davis with 1:48 remaining to make it 55-47. Then, after the Roadrunners got the ball back on a steal by PF Rashon Haralson, the lead went to double digits when Haralson made a pair of free throws with 1:25 left to make it 57-47. Davis scored after a pass from PG Adam Ross to push the margin to 59-47 moments later to seal the win for Rio Hondo.
Jones made 11 of 14 shots from the floor, including a 3-pointer, and pulled down a team-high 7 rebs, blocked 2 shots and grabbed 4 steals. Davis and Haralson each added 9 pts, and Davis also had 5 steals. Ross, despite an off-day shooting, had 8 pts plus 5 asts and 4 steals. PG Ariel Hall-Jones came off the bench to dish out a game-high 6 asts.
Harbor lost despite a monster game from Ctr Charles Jenkins, who had 26 pts and 20 rebs, both easily game-highs. SF Jonathan Williams and Ctr Antonio Hodge each had 8 pts for the Seahawks.
