Santa Ana 80, #12 West LA 70

SG Tyre Thompson had 27 pts and 9 rebs, and SF Cartier Carter came off the bench to add 19 pts as Santa Ana (2-7) upset #12 West LA (6-3), 80-70, Thursday afternoon in the first round of the Rio Hondo Classic in Whittier.

Thompson made 11 of 21 shots, including 4 threes, to power the Dons to the win over a West LA squad that had defeated Santa Ana, xx-xx, just xx days earlier.

West LA held a 9-point lead at 57-48 midway through the second half before Santa Ana rallied, tying the game on a three by Thompson with just less than 7 minutes remaining. A free throw by Carter put the Dons on top, and a basket by Carter on a feed from PG A.J. Laguana gave Santa Ana a 66-63 lead. A free throw by Thompson made it 67-63 with just less than 6 minutes left.

But West LA was still just 4 points back until another three by Thompson that made it 75-68. Then a pair of free throws by PF Terryn Clark made it 77-68. A free throw by Laguana, who finished with 7 pts, 5 asts and 4 steals, pushed the Santa Ana lead into double digits at 78-68 with 43.6 seconds left, clinching the Dons’ second win of the season.

For West LA, PF Jerard Moret led the way with 17 pts and 8 rebs. SF Tim Jackson had 14 pts and 8 rebs, and PG Justin Archie had 12 pts, 8 rebs and a game-high 6 asts. Ctr Craig Rodgers came off the bench and played extremely well with 9 pts, 6 rebs and 4 blocked shots before fouling out with 2:06 left.
