Glendale 87, Canyons 83

Glendale (5-2) overcame a 14-point first-half deficit to edge WSC-South rival Canyons (6-4), 87-83, in the Third Place game at the Rancho Vista Shootout at AVC Sunday afternoon in Lancaster.

SF Deonte Wyatt had 18 pts and PG Jose Garcia had 13, and each made a pair of free throws in the final seconds to clinch the win for the Vaqueros.

Canyons held a 34-20 lead midway through the first half after a 3-point basket by SF Rendon Dominguez, and held a 10-point lead at 45-35 at halftime.

But Glendale rallied early in the second half, tying the game at 52 with just over 13 minutes left and taking a 57-56 lead on a 3-pointer by SG Corey Davis with 10:40 left.

After that, the lead went back and forth until a 3-point play by Garcia made it 78-74 with 2:03 left. After that, Glendale held the lead the rest of the way.

Canyons stayed close, cutting the margin to two points several times, but could never quite pull even. A pair of free throws by Ctr Garry Bradley with 58.6 seconds left made it 80-78, but than a putback basket by SG Daniel Palmer with 30 seconds left made it 82-78. Then a pair of free throws by PG Brian Kimble with 28.4 seconds left made it 82-80. And COC seemed to get the break it needed when PF Narbeh Ebrahimian made just one of two free throws with 25.1 seconds left, leaving it a one-possession game at 83-80.

But COC turned the ball over moments later, with Garcia slapping the ball off Kimble's knee as he drove the lane with 20 seconds left. A pair of free throws by Garcia with 16.7 seconds left made it 85-80. COC got a 3-pointer by PF Brannon Bradley to make it 85-83 with 5.8 seconds left. But a pair of free throws by Wyatt with 4.1 seconds left made it 87-83 and finally clinched the win.

Wyatt finished with 18 pts, 7 asts and 6 rebs, and was named to the all-tournament team. Garcia, who had 13 pts, 8 asts and 5 rebs, was also named to the all-tournament team. C. Davis came off the bench and had 15 pts for the winners.

For Canyons, B. Bradley led all scorers with 24 pts and was named to the all-tournament team. R. Dominguez had 15 pts and Brian Kimble had 11 pts, 5 rebs and 4 asts. SG Chris Knott came off the bench for 14 pts and 5 asts. G. Bradley had 10 pts and 7 rebs.

This game featured a bizarre situation regarding Glendale Ctr Lucian Franklin. After a foul was erronoeously charged to him early in the second half, he was assessed his 5th foul with 14:57 left and sent to the bench. Then, with 3:57 left, the officials conferred and determined that what had been his 4th foul should have been charged to Ebrahimian. With just over three minutes left, Franklin re-entered the game, back from the great beyond. But he ended up fouling out - for good this time - with 59.6 seconds left, and none of this had an impact on the outcome of the game.
