Riverside 84, Moorpark 57

Defending state champion Riverside (6-2) was in peak form Sunday afternoon, romping past Moorpark (4-4), 84-57, to capture the Rancho Vista Shootout at Antelope Valley College in Lancaster.

PG Daniel Redmon had 11 pts, 7 asts and 4 steals and was named tourney MVP. The 6-2 sophomore had 50 points in the first two games this weekend, victories over Miramar and Glendale.

On Sunday, Moorpark began the game with 3-pointers by Ctr Mike Meza and SF Spencer Schulte to take a 6-0 lead. And Riverside missed its first 5 shots from the floor.

After that, it was all RCC. The Tigers went on a 16-0 run, taking a ten-point lead as Moorpark missed its next 16 shots from the floor. Riverside never lost that lead, holding an 8-point advantage at halftime and pulling away midway through the second half.

Late in the first half, Moorpark rallied to cut the margin to four points at 33-29 after a pair of free throws by SG Dallas Rutherford. But SG Willie Trimble made a free throw to make it 34-29 with about a minute left, and then hit a 3-pointer as the first half buzzer sounded to make it 37-29 at the break.

When the second half started, Riverside scored the first six points to push the lead to 14 at 43-29. A dunk by Ctr Kevin Bradshaw after a steal by SG Donovan Buford made it a 17-point game at 50-33.

Moorpark tried to rally again, cutting the margin to 9 at 52-43 and 54-45. But then Redmon stole a pass, went in for the lay-up, drew the foul and made the free throw to make it 57-45 with 12 minutes left. Then just six seconds later, he stole the ball near midcourt and went in for another lay-up to make it 59-45. A pair of free throws by PG James Calhoun just 24 seconds later made it 61-45.

This time, Moorpark had no answer. A runner in the lane by Trimble pushed the margin to 21 at 67-46 with 7:11 left. Then Trimble hit a 3-pointer with 6:28 left to make it 70-46 and end any remaining doubt as to the game's outcome.

Trimble led Riverside with 16 pts, and was named to the all-tournament team. Buford came off the bench for 14 pts and 7 rebs, and Calhoun came off the bench for 12 pts, 5 rebs, 4 asts and 4 steals. Bradshaw had 8 pts, 5 rebs and 5 blocks, and was named to the all-tournament team, largely for his defense. He held Meza, the Moorpark center, to just one field goal and anchored the RCC defense that held Moorpark to just 27.6% shooting for the game.

For Moorpark, Rutherford led all scorers with 23 pts and was named to the all-tournament team. So was Meza, who had 8 points and 6 rebounds against Riverside but had 37 points in the first round against Mira Costa.
