San Diego City 67, Fullerton 54

PG Devyn Iglehart scored 17 pts and Ctr Kyle Anderson scored 14 to lead #13 San Diego City to a 67-54 win over Fullerton in a second-round game at the 2012 RCC Holiday Tournament Thursday evening.

It was no surprise that these two teams met at the RCC tournament, but it was a surprise that either was in the winners' bracket. But SD City beat last year's state semifinalist Citrus, and Fullerton edged highly-regarded San Bernardino Valley, all on Tuesday, to set the stage.

Thursday's game was very evenly-played for most of the first half, but then San Diego City (6-5) pulled away for a 10-point halftime lead. The Knights led by at least nine points the rest of the way.

Neither team led by more than four points until a free throw by Iglehart gave San Diego City a 29-24 lead with 1:47 left in the first half. Then Iglehart made a 3-pointer with just under a minute later to make it 32-24, and he added two more free throws wtih 3.1 seconds left in the half to give the Knights a 34-24 lead at the break.

San Diego City quickly expanded the lead when the second half started. Anderson registered a steal on defense on Fullerton's first possession, and scored on the offensive end just 38 seconds into the half. He was fouled and missed the free throw, but PF Justice Howard got the rebound. Moments later Iglehart fed Anderson for a slam to make it 38-24 less than a minute into the second half.

SG Anthony Poindexter hit a jumper to push San Diego's lead to 15 points at 40-25, and the Knights also led by 15 points at 42-27 and 49-34 later in the half.

Fullerton (4-6) cut the deficit to nine points at 52-43 after a 3-point play by PF Rufus Jemison after a steal by SF Julian Caldwell, who then passed to Jemison from the floor for the score. With 10:19 left it seemed the Hornets still had plenty of time to get back in the game.

But that would be as close as Fullerton would get. SG Taylor Nelson hit a 3-pointer moments later to make it 55-43. Then he converted a 3-point play off a pass from SF Josh White after a blocked shot by Anderson that made it 58-43 with 7:48 left. SD City led by double digits the rest of the way.

Iglehart finished with 17 pts on 3-for-5 from the floor and 9-for-12 from the line to lead all scorers. Anderson had 14 pts on 6-for-8 from the floor and 6 rebs. Howard had 8 pts and a team-high 8 rebs. Newton came off the bench for 10 pts, all in the second half, on 3-for-3 from the floor and 3-for-3 from the line.

For Fullerton, the standout was reserve guard Eddie Sparks, who came off the bench for 13 pts, 4 rebs, 3 asts and a steal but fouled out with 4:18 left. Caldwell had 11 pts, 8 rebs, 6 asts and 2 steals though he was just 4-for-17 from the floor. PF Dakoda Allinson had 9 pts and 7 rebs.
