Compton 90, Rio Hondo 81

Four players scored at least 16 points for Compton, which overcame a slow start to post its second straight victory after starting the season 0-5 with a 90-81 win over Rio Hondo at the 2nd Annual Davy Fortson Classic at Santa Monica.

Compton (2-5) notched its first win of the season Friday night against #12-ranked Santa Ana, but started slowly Saturday afternoon, falling behind, 18-6, in the first five-plus minutes of the game.

But then the swarming pressure that is coach Keith Higgins' trademark began to take effect. The Tartars took a 26-24 lead on a 3-pointer by SG Jamell McMillan and never trailed again. Two free throws by SF Ray Foote after a steal made it 28-24, and two more 3-pointers by McMiller pushed Compton's lead to double digits at 34-24 with 4:20 left in the first half. Still another McMillan three pushed the Compton lead to 38-25.

Rio Hondo (3-4) cut the margin to single digits to trail, 44-35, at the half, and continued to rally early in the second half. A 3-point play by PG Anthony Farmer made it 52-49, and a driving lay-up by SG Gold Okolugo brought the Roadrunners within a point at 52-51.

But then Compton pulled away again, this time for good. A jumper by SG Wesley Harris pushed the lead back to double digits at 64-54, and a slam dunk by Ctr Luis Engleton after a blocked shot by Foote made it 72-61 with about 9 minutes remaining.

Rio Hondo drew within 6 points at 72-66, and trailed by just 5 points at 76-71 with 4 mintues remaining. But a driving lay-up by Foote and a pair of free throws by PF Justin Bedford pushed the Compton lead back to double digits at 82-71 with 4:11 left, and the Tartars led comfortably the ret of the way.

Harris led Compton with 18 pts, and added 3 rebs, 4 asts and 2 steals. The ultra-athletic Foote had 17 pts, 6 rebs, 2 blocks, 2 steals and an assist.
