Six players scored in double figures for #10 Southwestern in a 100-91 win over Victor Valley Saturday afternoon in the Third Place game of the 2014 Mountie Classic at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut.
Southwestern (8-4) led virtually the entire game, and opened a 15-point lead in the early minutes of the second half. But Victor Valley (6-6) quickly cut the margin back to single digits and took an 86-85 lead on a driving lay-up by Stephen Evans with just under three minutes to play. After Shawn Lathan made two free throws for the Jaguars, Kimani Lane drained a three to give Victor Valley an 89-87 lead.
But then Southwestern closed the game with a 13-2 run to come away with the victory. Kevin Windley made two free throws to tie it with 2:15 left, and put the Jaguars in front with a driving lay-up moments later. Victor Valley cut the margin to a single point when Lane scored on a driving lay-up with 1:09 left.
Victor Valley's Sean Butts went to the free throw line with 42.9 seconds left, and made the first shot to make it 93-91. He missed the second, but Windley got the rebound for Southwestern. Lathan made two free throws with 15.9 seconds left to make it 95-91 and put Southwestern in control. The final score was a little deceptive as Asante Yarborough threw in a 3-pointer just as the final buzzer sounded to lift Southwestern to the century mark.
