Antelope Valley 68, Glendale 59

PF Daviyon Draper scored 15 pts and helped reduce Glendale standout PF Emmett Duvall to a non-factor as Antelope Valley topped the Vaqueros 68-59 to win the consolation championship of the 62nd Annual Gregg Anderson Memorial Tournament Sunday afternoon at AVC.

Draper had 15 pts, 6 rebs, 2 asts, 4 blocks and 2 steals, but even more importantly he helped contain Duvall, who entered the game averaging more than 19 points per game to just a single field goal. And Duvall also had 7 turnovers before fouling out with 5:51 left in the game.

Antelope Valley (8-2) used its press to take an early lead, as Glendale (5-2) missed its first 6 shot attempts while mixing in 6 turnovers (2 by Duvall, who also went to the bench with 2 quick fouls). AVC held a 10-2 lead in the first few minutes of the game.

But Glendale adjusted, and the Vaqueros went on a 20-4 run to take a 22-14 lead with 6:14 left in the first half. Duvall - back in the game even with the 2 fouls - tied the game off a pass from PG Jalen Etienne at 12, and Etienne gave Glendale a 17-14 lead moments later with a 3-point basket.

However, that was not only the only basket of the game for Duvall, but the only field goal for Etienne as well. And though Glendale extended its lead to as many as 8 points at 22-14, the lead was short-lived.

Antelope Valley answered with an 8-0 run, tying the score at 22 on a slam dunk by PF Zachary Hollis off a pass from Draper with 3:44 left in the first half. The half ended with the score tied at 28.

In the second half, Antelope Valley took a 36-33 lead on a 3-point play by Draper, and then gradually pulled away. Draper scored on a floater to make it 40-35, and Hollis made a jumper moments later to make it 42-35. PG Adrian Francis scored on a lay-up after a steal by Hollis to push AVC's lead to 44-35 and cap an 11-2 run. And Duvall picked his 4th foul moments later with 12:48 to play.

AVC held a single-digit lead over the next few minutes, but then Glendale Ctr Gor Plavchyan got his 4th foul with 8:20 left. At that point, Vaquero coach Brian Beauchemin rolled the dice, not only keeping Plavchyan on the floor but bringing Duvall back into the game as the Vaqeros were within striking distance, trailing 53-46 at the time.

But that gamble backfired when Draper scored in the post and also drew Duvall's 5th foul with 5:51 left; he made the resulting free throw to make it 58-48. SG Lucciano Gamiz made 2 free throws moments later to make it 60-48. A 3-point play by PG Ismail Ali with 3:39 left pushed the AVC lead to 63-49, and the Marauders led by at least 9 points the rest of the way.

Draper led the Marauders in scoring with his 15 pts and was named to the all-tournament team. Ali had 14 pts and 4 steals, and SF Lawrence White had 9 pts, 3 asts, 2 rebs and 2 steals. Ctr Tajee Shaw had 6 pts and a team-high 8 rebs.

For Glendale, Plavchyan had game-highs of 20 pts and 12 rebs and was rewarded with a berth on the all-tournament team. SG Emerson Castaneda scored 15 pts on 5 three-pointers. SF Sammy Darling came off the bench for 12 pts on 4-for-4 from the floor plus 6 rebs and 5 steals.
