PG Keith Smith scored 21 pts while SG Gerry Blakes and SF T.A. Dixon each scored 16 for #6 San Bernardino Valley in a 77-62 win over Canyons in the championship game of the 62nd Annual Gregg Anderson Memorial Tournament at Antelope Valley College in Lancaster.
San Bernardino Valley (10-2) fell behind early, but took a lead with 8:52 left in the first half and led the rest of the way in Sunday's championship game. Smith, who had 21 pts Sunday and averaged 20.3 points per game in the tournament, was named tourney Most Valuable Player.
Sunday, Canyons (4-4), a surprise winner over #3-ranked host Antelope Valley in the first round Friday night and a blowout victor over new WSC-North rival Ventura on Saturday, held a narrow 3-point lead after 11-plus mintues.
But then SBVC SG Charles Callison made a 3-pointer with 8:52 left in the first half to make it 20-19. And on the play, COC Ctr Dailbor Nonkovic was called for a flagrant foul under the basket, resulting in free throws for SBVC Ctr Marcus Fuggins. The 6-9 sopohomore center made one of two free throws to give the Wolverines a 21-20 lead.
And SBVC would hold that lead the rest of the way. A lay-up by Dixon after a steal made it 23-20, and another basket by Dixon made it 27-22. SBVC gradually increased its advantage to 9 points after Blakes scored on a fast break late in the half to make it 36-27.
In the second half, SBVC continued to gradually lengthen its lead over the stubborn Cougars. A short jumper by Blakes made it 38-27. Two free throws by Dixon pushed the margin to a dozen points at 45-33 with 15:42 left. A putback basket by Fuggins made it a 13-point game at 57-44 with just over 9 minutes to go. A slam dunk by Blakes after a steal by Smith made it 59-44, and Fuggins scored on a tip-in to make it 61-44 with 7:40 left. SBVC led by double digits the rest of the way.
Smith finished with 21 pts, 4 rebs, 4 asts and 2 steals to earn Most Valuable Player honors. The Arizona State-bound Blakes had 16 pts, 13 rebs, 5 asts and 3 steals, and Dixon had 16 pts on 7-for-11 from the floor plus 6 rebs, 3 asts and 2 steals; they joined Smith on the all-tournament team. Fuggins just missed a double-double with 9 pts and 10 rebs, and Callison also had 9 pts. Callison, who had 17 points in SBVC's first-round win over Glendale on Friday, was also named to the all-tournament team. PF Steven Adams had 4 pts and grabbed 12 rebs.
For Canyons, SG David Horst had a huge game with 26 pts, including 3 threes, plus 5 rebs, 2 asts, 4 blocks and 4 steals. He was named to the all-tournament team and also recognized with a 110% Player award.
