SF Tyler Schreckengost had 23 pts and PF Kevin Dawson had 13 plus a couple of key plays late as LA Harbor (5-5) edged host Rio Hondo (3-3), 67-64, Wednesday evening in the first round of the Roadrunner Round-Up tournament.
Dawson's 3-pointer broke a 58-58 tie with less than three minutes to go, and his steal in the final minute helped the Seahawks maintain a slim lead. But victory wasn't assured until a last-second 3-pointer by Rio Hondo missed at the buzzer.
The teams were tied 32-32 after an evenly-played first half. But when the second half started, Rio Hondo faltered badly, missing 13 of its first 14 shots of the half while committing 7 turnovers to fall behind, 50-36, midway through the half.
However, the Roadrunners rallied, starting with a basket by Ctr Ryan Jefferson off an inbounds play with 8:29 left. That sparked a 16-2 run that got Rio Hondo back in the game to trail by just two points at 54-52 with 5:26 left.
As the clock wound down, Rio Hondo tied the game at 58 on a 3-pointer by PG Maurice Cole with 3:06 left. But Dawson answered with a 3-pointer moments later for Harbor, putting the Seahawks back into the lead.
Harbor never surrendered that lead, but the margin was just a point after Cole hit a runner with just over a minute left. Then the Seahawks committed a turnover with 53.9 seconds left. But Dawson stole the ball back, getting it to Schreckengost, who was fouled with 36.7 seconds left.
Screckengost made one free throw to make it 64-62. He missed the second, but SF Tyler Nelson got the rebound. That led to two free throws by PG John Raquel with 26.6 seconds left that made ie 66-62.
Rio Hondo got a pair of free throws from Cole with 23.4 seconds left to get within two points at 66-64. Then Raquel was fouled again with 11.8 seconds left; he made the first free throw but missed the second, giving Rio Hondo one last chance, trailing by 3 points.
After a timeout, the ball went to PG Nathen Mohri, who attempted a 3-pointer from behind the left elbow. But the shot missed as the final horn sounded, allowing Harbor to hold on for the 67-64 win.
Four players scored in double figures for Rio Hondo, led by SG Darryl Alexander, who had 14. Cole had 12 pts plus 6 asts and 4 steals, PF Trayvon McNutt had 11 pts and 8 rebs and Jefferson had 11 pts and 6 rebs.
