2008 Diablo Valley Shootout

The Diablo Valley Shootout took place July 25-26 at DVC in Pleasant Hill.

I managed to attend 10 games featuring 18 teams, all from Northern California. I tried to concentrate on teams that are usually fairly successful, and passed on Foothill & Santa Barbara since I'd seen them earlier in the month at the 3 Stripes event at USC. But if I happened to miss your team, please try not to take it personally. Since I was only able to attend one of the two days, and since there were two games going on simultaneously, I had to make some tough choices!

What's Posted: There are box scores from the games I saw, a brief game-by-game summary for all 10 games, and my selections for All-Stars & Most Valuable Player. As you might expect, it's just about impossible to keep records on the 200 or so players involved without there being some mistakes. I've made an effort to be accurate, but if anyone finds any mistaken identifications, please tell me. I'll change them as soon I as know better!

On the Box Scores: The game format at the DVC is unique. There are two halves with running time, but the first half was 25 minutes and the second half 18 minutes. Then, if the game was close, the teams continued to a "target score". That is figured by adding four points to the score of whichever team is in the lead when time runs out. Each game took about an hour and obviously the stats are going to be affected by the shorter playing time. As a rule of thumb, I'd recommend multiplying all the numbers by 1.5 to get an accurate comparison with a regular season game. So if someone scored 10 pts in a Showcase game, it would be comparable to 15 pts in a regular season game. The same goes for the other stats, particularly rebounds and assists. As always, I kept my full slate of usual stats for the games.

Another thing to mention is the free-throw format: free throws were condensed to keep the game moving. If a player was awarded 2 shots (or a 1-and-1), he was awarded one point automatically, and shot one free throw for the other point. If the player was fouled when attempting a 3-pointer, extra point was awarded automatically.

Also...there were no foulouts. So you might see players with 5, 6 or even 11 personal fouls. Theoretically, a player could be "sent off" for excessive fouls, but as far as I know that did not happen in this event.

On Mistakes: Again, I've tried to be accurate on the box scores but I'm sure there are mistakes. And again, if I've misidentified a player, I'd be happy to correct any errors if someone lets me know about it. (If you think my stat totals or whatever are wrong, well, that may be something we all have to live with).

And finally: Much thanks and appreciation to Coach Coccimiglio for his hospitality and getting me set up with rosters. It had been a while since I'd attended a DVC shootout (2002, actually), but I had a great time and am very happy to have once again had the chance to report on this great event!
