PF Ryan Gates' 3-pointer with 31.7 seconds left, his 5th three of the game, gave host Glendale (12-18) a 79-77 win over #16 West LA (20-13) in a WSC-South game Thursday.
Gates finished with 17 pts on the night, and his long-distance shooting proved pivotal for the Vaqueros on several occasions.
The score was close for most of the first half, but a pair of 3-pointers by West LA's SF Antqawn James plus 4 pts from PF Lester Clay late in the half helped the Oilers take a 44-35 lead at the break.
West LA extended their lead to 11 at 52-41 midway through the second half. But a 3-pointer by Gates and a traditional 3-point play by Ctr Mark Felder helped Glendale overcome the deficit. And minutes later a Gates three gave Glendale their first lead of the second half at 61-59.
West LA held a 77-73 lead with under 2 minutes left, but Glendale's PG Alton Preston scored on a layup to cut the margin to 2. On Glendale's next possession, Felder was fouled and made 1-2 FTs, cutting it to 77-76. Following a defensive stop, the stage was set for Gates' game-winning shot.
SG DeJuan Stevens and James each took potential game-winning 3-point attempts in the final 15 seconds, but both shots bounced off the rim and out.
Felder led all scorers with 31 pts. SF Justin Turman had a big night with 18 pts including 3 threes. SG Germaine Dixon led Glendale with 7 rebs, and Preston dished out 9 assists to claim game honors.
For West LA, Ctr David Day had a big game with 17 pts, 6 rebs and 3 blocked shots. Stevens had a solid game with 14 pts, 4 rebs and 4 asts. SG Phillip Givens tossed in 12 pts on 5/7 shooting and handed out 4 asts. PG Quenton Crenshaw topped West LA playmakers with 5 asts, while PF Zac Jordan claimed game honors with 8 rebs.
