2005 Fall Showcase - Game by Game

The 2005 Fall California JUCO Showcase took place October 1 & 2 on the campus of Cal State – Dominguez Hills. Some 17 teams, 8 of which participated in the 2005 postseason, were in attendance.

I saw 13 games, which included either one or two appearances by all 17 teams.

Here’s a game-by-game listing of those games, followed by the results from a few other games at the event:

Saturday:

10 am – Pier Pressure (LA Harbor) 57, Van Nuys (LA Valley) 37

A sizzling shooting exhibition by SF Brandon Russell propelled Pier Pressure to an easy win in the first game of the weekend. Russell made his first 6 shots, including a pair of threes, and finished with 18 pts on 7/8 from the floor. Starting SF Thurman Sutton also had a strong game with 13 pts, 4 rebs, 2 asts and 3 steals. PG Derrick Clark added 12 pts plus a best-of-the-day 8 asts, while PF Keith Mason had 12 pts and a team-high 8 rebs.

For Van Nuys, PF Kevin Thomas posted a double-double with 12 pts and a best-of-the-weekend 13 rebs. SG Sterling Wilson added 11 pts and 5 rebs.

11 am – The Dawgs (East LA) 49, Chula Vista (Southwestern) 45

The Dawgs’ backcourt combo of PG Arcenio Ramirez Jr. and SG Steve Monreal proved to be too much for Chula Vista, combining for 36 points and 6 threes, as The Dawgs claimed a 4-point win. Monreal led all scorers with 21 pts, 17 in the first half, and grabbed a team-high 6 rebs. Meanwhile, Ramirez scored 11 of his 15 pts in the second half, and also dished out a team-best 4 asts.

For Chula Vista, the loss came despite a smashing performance by backup SG Roman Leon, who had 11 pts (on 4/4 from the floor), 3 rebs and 3 steals. SF George Skrelja added 9 pts and 5 boards.

12 noon- 17th Street Hoops (Santa Ana) 56, El Cajon (Cuyamaca) 47

SG Terrance Hundley scored 17 pts and SF Drew Terry added 16 as the pair combined for 7 threes in 17th Street’s win. Ctr Sean Luecke added 12 pts and 8 boards for the winners. And backup SG Brandt Bangs knocked down 3 more threes, bringing 17th Street’s total to 10 for the game.

For El Cajon, SF Luke Kelley led the way with 12 pts, including a pair of threes. SF James Francisco had a strong game with 7 pts and 6 asts, while PG Marlon Pierce added 7 pts and 5 asts. PF Erik Johnson grabbed a game-high 11 boards.

1 pm: The Buzz (Fullerton) 64, Chula Vista (Southwestern) 27

In the first of several overpowering performances, The Buzz romped to a 37-point win over Chula Vista. SG Alex Mallari came off the bench to pour in 18 pts to lead all scorers. But this was a team effort as all 8 players scored. The Buzz’ defense held Chula Vista to just 36% shooting while forcing 21 turnovers. Meanwhile, The Buzz committed a total of just 8 turnovers.

For Chula Vista, SG Krystopher Lawrence led the way with 6 pts. SG Joshua Gordon grabbed a team-best 5 rebs.

2 pm: The Beach (Long Beach) 52, Downtown (San Diego City) 50

SF Demetrius Hazel scored 15 pts and grabbed 9 rebs to lead The Beach to a narrow win in one of the more entertaining games of the weekend. 6-6 Chris Fields started at PG and added 13 pts, 2 asts and 3 steals. SG Pearson Smith added 12 pts while PF Isaiah Bridgette had a very solid game with 4 pts, 6 rebs and 4 asts.

For Downtown, SF Cornel Williams led the way with 16 pts, including 4 threes. Ctr Ervin Dunson added 10 pts. SG Packy Conway-O’Neill dished out a game-high 7 asts.

3 pm: The Buzz (Fullerton) 58, The Pier (Santa Monica) 19

Four players scored in double figures for The Buzz, which rolled to an easy win. PF Andre Lyons had 11 pts while SG Tim Denson, PF Roderick Johnson and Ctr Kurt Graeber each had 10. SF Phil Jones had 8 plus a game-high 11 rebs.

But the incredible story in this game was that The Buzz held The Pier scoreless in the first half. At the break, it was 29-0, and by the time Kyle Guilland finally got The Pier on the board at the 13:53 mark of the second half, The Buzz had already built a 37-0 lead.

Ctr Shakir Johnson led The Pier with 8 pts, while Guilland added 7.

Sunday

10 am: The Beach (Long Beach) 61, 17th Street Hoops (Santa Ana) 46

SG Pearson Smith and SF Demetrius Hazel each scored 13 pts while PF Isaiah Bridgette added 12 to lead The Beach to a double-digit win. Smith and Bridgette each grabbed 6 rebs, and Bridgette also dished out 4 asts. PG Chris Hart had 4 pts and dished out a game-high 7 asts.

For 17th Street, SG Terrance Hundley led the way with 13 pts (including 3 threes) despite arriving at halftime. Ctr Sean Luecke and SF Drew Terry each had 8 pts. PG Keith Cherry had 7 pts plus 4 asts.

11 am: The Cats (Canyons) 54, The Entertainer’s Hoops (Trade Tech) 49

SF Andre Murray scored 20 pts and grabbed 6 rebs to lead The Cats to a narrow win. Murray did a bit of everything as he also dished out 2 assists, blocked 2 shots, grabbed 3 steals…and committed 9 turnovers. SG Marquis DuBose added 14 pts (2 threes) and 3 steals for the winners. PG Joshua Hill came off the bench to dish out a team-high 4 asts.

For The Entertainer’s Hoops, Ctr Fernando Forde led the way with 14 pts on 7/9 from the floor. SG Sean Terrell added 13 including 3 threes. PF Royce Parks had 8 pts plus a team-high 6 rebs. PG J.L. Lewis dished out a game-high 5 asts.

12 noon: The Pier (Santa Monica) 49, San Diego (Grossmont) 47

PG Marc Brathwaite scored 13 pts and dished out 5 asts to lead The Pier to a come-from-behind win over San Diego. SG Kenneth Michaels had 9 pts, 6 rebs and 3 asts while SF Anthony Lomello and PF Rondell Eskridge each added 8 pts.

San Diego began the game on a 12-0 run and still led by 7 at the half before The Pier rallied for the win. PF James Haley led San Diego with 12 pts on 6/8 from the floor. Ctr Troy Valencia had a solid game with 6 pts, 6 rebs and a team-best 5 asts.

1 pm: N-Flight (Pasadena) 37, Kingsley Glass (Antelope Valley) 35

PG Hasan Moody scored 12 pts and grabbed a best-of-the-weekend 6 steals to help N-Flight post a narrow win over Kingsley. SG Travis Smith added 10 pts while PF Omar Holsey had 6 pts and a game-high 9 rebs.

For Kingsley Glass, PF Raphael Harris led the way with 10 pts and 5 blocked shots. SG Donte Bell added 7 pts, 4 rebs and 3 asts.

Remarkably, Kingsley lost despite shooting 50% from the floor while N-Flight won despite shooting just 29.3%. But that advantage was mitigated by the fact that each team made 12 field goals. Kingsley was without Deonte Huff, who figures to be AVC’s top player this season, and Kingsley hurt its cause by finishing just 6 of 16 from the FT line.

2 pm: Team Intensity (LA Southwest) 49, Say No (West LA) 44

PG Craig Walls and SF Gerrell Finney each scored 12 pts as Team Intensity pulled out a close win over Say No. But Intensity would have been hard-pressed to win without the clutch play of Ctr Rawlston Charles, who had a 3-point play and a pair of rebounds in the final minute to secure the win. Charles finished with 7 pts and 4 boards overall.

Say No rallied from a 10-point deficit to tie the game on a 3-pt FG by Ctr Michael Martin with just under 6 minutes left, but couldn’t hold off Intensity’s late-game surge. Martin finished with 9 pts and 5 rebs. But the real standout for Say No was PG Joseph Bolden, who made 7 of 10 shots to finish with a game-high 19 pts.

3 pm: The Entertainer’s Hoops (Trade Tech) 51, Van Nuys (LA Valley) 46

Ctr Tarif Purdom was perfect from the floor, making 6 of 6 shots for 12 pts, and grabbed a team-high 5 rebs as The Entertainer’s Hoops overcame a 10-point halftime deficit for the win. SGs Sean Terrell and Derrick Hankins each added 10 pts for the winners. PG J.L. Lewis dished out a game-high 5 asts.

For Van Nuys, the standout once again was PF Kevin Thomas, who made 7 of 9 shots from the floor en route to a game-high 16 pts. But the next highest scorer for Van Nuys was Ctr Jean Regis, who had 6 (plus a game-high 7 rebs). PG Gus Valle had 5 pts and a team-best 4 asts.

4 pm: N-Flight (Pasadena) 50, Pier Pressure (LA Harbor) 29

In the weekend’s finale, SG Jamaal Hall poured in 17 pts to lead N-Flight to a dominating win over a tired Pier Pressure squad. PF Paul Mitchell also had a strong game for the winners with 10 pts, 5 rebs, 4 blocks and 4 steals. PG L.B. Taylor had 6 pts, 4 asts and 3 steals in a solid performance.

For Pier Pressure, Ctr Keith Mason led the way with 7 pts and 5 rebs. But the team was clearly exhausted, as evidenced by their 27% shooting from the floor. Incredibly, Pier Pressure managed just 1 assist in the game (from Sidney Ginyard).

Fatigue didn’t seem to be a factor for N-Flight. That was because none of the players had played in the earlier Sunday game as N-Flight split their squad into two distinct teams.
