Here is a summary of the best and the brighest of what I saw over that weekend:

Best Team:

The Buzz (Fullerton). Not only did The Buzz win all 4 of its games, it did so in dominating fashion. Though they didn't play the toughest of schedules, their average margin of victory of 31.75 points indicates that it really wouldn't matter who they played.

Most Remarkable Occurrence:

The Buzz (Fullerton)'s first half vs. The Pier (Santa Monica). I've never seen anything like this before: The Buzz SHUT OUT The Pier for the entire first half. At intermission, it was 29-0. The Pier was 0-for-11 from the floor, did not attempt a free throw, and committed 13 turnovers in the first half. Kyle Guilland finally broke the drought with (of all things) a 3-pointer with 13:53 left in the game.

Most Amazing Recovery:

The Pier (Santa Monica). On Sunday, they again started off horribly, falling behind 12-0 to San Diego (Grossmont). But this time, The Pier rallied to claim a 49-47 victory. For the weekend, The Pier finished 2-2 despite the above-noted first half vs. The Buzz.

Now I Know Who He Is:

Paul Mitchell, N-Flight (Pasadena). During halftime, I inquired as to the identity of #54 for N-Flight, asking "That's Deon Marcus, isn't it?" The guy looked like Marcus - tall, with braids, but played nothing like the perimeter-oriented Marcus. The N-Flight coach said, "No, that's Paul Mitchell." Well, I won't mistake them again. Mitchell went 4/6 from the floor for 10 pts, grabbed 5 rebs, blocked 4 shots and snatched 4 steals as N-Flight claimed a 21-point win vs. Pier Pressure (LA Harbor).

Inconsistent, With an Explanation:

Tarif Purdom, The Entertainer's Hoops (Trade Tech). Purdom played in 2 games on Sunday; he received a combined rating of 0 in one game, and a combined rating of 26 in the other. There is a good explanation, however; he barely played in the first game but took advantage of extra minutes in the second game. In fact, his strong performance in the second game gained him a spot on the All-Showcase team (below).

Inconsistent, No Explanation:

Marc Brathwaite, The Pier (Santa Monica). In his two games, Brathwaite registered the 5th-highest performance rating of the weekend (+21) in one game, and tied for the worst rating of the weekend (-7) in the other. Aside from the competition (the good game was vs. San Diego (Grossmont) while the bad game was against The Buzz (Fullerton)) I have no explanation for this. But it shows he has the talent to be a frontline player this year.
