2006 Fullcourt Press All West JUCO Camp

The 2006 Fullcourt Press All West JUCO Camp took place July 8 & 9 at the SCBA Center in Cypress.

Over 100 players from all over California and beyond were on hand. The players signed up individually (there were no school-based teams) though the club teams Compton Magic and San Diego Magic, the hosts, were there. The other players were each assigned to a "camp team".

Because of a schedule conflict, I was able to attend only the Saturday session.

Because there were so many players and so little time to see them all, I did things a little differently for this event than I normally do.

For each player, I tracked (and kept stats for) one half of either one game or two games. Since there were 12 teams full of players and just 4 game slots (with 3 games going on simultaneously) this was the only way I could see every player. For about 2/3 of the players, I saw them play one half; for the other 1/3, I saw them play two halves, though not two halves from the same game.

This might seem a little haphazard, but again, this was the only way I could see everyone. Plus, viewing random game segments adds a reality check to the process. Many recruiters operate in much the same way: they're not going to watch complete games or spend an extended period of time watching players they're not already interested in. One often has a very limited time in which to make an impression!

Since these stats are not within the context of a game box score, I just put them into the spreadsheet (and won't type all that out again here). The player ratings, as always, came from those stats.

I've calculated the usual ratings: a Performance Index (a slightly-modified version of what is used at the NBA Pre-Draft camp), an Activity Rating (my own creation, which measures a player's involvement in the game) and a Combined Rating (which blends the first two ratings). It matters little whether a player played in one game or two as all ratings factor in (approximate) minutes played.

Also, I've selected three teams of All-Stars plus an Honorable Mention list, based largely on these ratings (an my subjective observations that night).

Thanks to Etop Udo-Ema and Jeff Theiler at Compton Magic for putting together a great camp, and for getting me set up with rosters and all. Great work, guys!
