SG Chris Smith (LA Southwest) had 30 pts on 13-of-15 shooting, and PF Cornel Williams (SD City/LB State) had 20 pts and 13 rebs as the Black team won the Top 20 All-Star game, 135-127.
Smith made his last 12 shots from the floor, and Williams posted a game-high rebound total for the winners. But PG Donte Smith (Mt. SAC/Pasadena/USC), SG Aaron Thompson (Cerritos) and PF Dean Hadley (Holmes JC - MS) made several plays in the last two minutes of the game to get the victory for their team.
The score was tied at 125 before a 2-point free throw by D. Smith put the Black team ahead. Then Hadley took a pass from Thompson to make it 129-125. PF Chris Brown (Long Beach) scored for the White team to make it 129-127, but then D. Smith fed Ctr Zachary Atkinson for a dunk that put the Black team back ahead by four points at 131-127. Then a Thompson basket on an outlet pass from Hadley to make it 133-127. A putback basket by Williams closed out the scoring, making it 135-127.
D. Smith finished with 15 pts, 8 rebs and 8 asts, while Thompson had a double-double with 10 pts, 10 rebs and 4 asts. Hadley had a strong game as well with 11 pts, 9 rebs and 5 asts.
Other standouts for the winning team included Atkinson, who had 14 pts and 9 rebs, and SF Jonathan Malloy (Montana State transfer), who had 10 pts, 7 rebs and 5 asts. SF Arnie Hollis (Santa Ana/West LA) also scored in double figures with 10 pts. PG Maurice Clady (Grossmont) had just 5 pts but dished out a game-high 9 asts.
For the White team, PG Jamel McGuire (SD City) led the way with 21 pts and 4 asts. SG Tyre Thompson (Santa Ana) had 17 pts and a team-high 7 asts, while SF Jerard Moret (West LA) had 17 pts and 6 asts. PF Ervin Dunson (SD City) had a double-double with 14 pts and 12 rebs. Other scorers to reach double figures included SG Buchi Awaji (Citrus) with 12 pts and Ctr Charles Garcia (Riverside) and SG Trevon Harmon (Pasadena) with 10 pts each.
